At the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, two state-of-the-art Da Vinci surgery robots have recently been added to the staff. Surgeons at the Trust will be able to use them, allowing for less intrusive procedures and faster patient recoveries.
Last month, the Trust got two robots for a total of £4.5 million as an investment from NHS England. Since then, fifty members of staff have had extensive training to handle the robots, and the robots are now actively aiding staff and patients.
Mr Philip Charlesworth, Consultant Urological Surgeon, stated, “These Da Vinci robots are a wonderful addition and will make a great difference in the surgery department. The Royal Berkshire Hospital has been offering robotic surgery to patients for 15 years, and the addition of these cutting-edge Da Vinci Xi robots has only improved the quality of care we can provide. Prostate cancer, bladder cancer (including new bladder reconstruction), colorectal cancer, and other gastrointestinal procedures are all treated with ground-breaking surgical approaches.

Robotic surgery is less intrusive, which is good news for patients because it means they’ll be back to their normal routines sooner. They’ve participated in a number of high-profile clinical trials over the past few years, and the results show that using robots to carry out the procedure results in better patient outcomes and fewer complications. They assist surgical teams with three instrumented arms and a camera that can magnify 15 times. The surgeon controls the robot arms from a control station while looking at a 3D display.
The magnification provided by robots allows for even more accurate surgery in the hands of an experienced surgeon, which not only speeds up recuperation times.

Two robotic ‘pickers’ at the inpatient pharmacy help the Pharmacy department dispense hundreds of pills daily, while AI is being used to speed up diagnostics in patients suspected of having strokes.
