A new luxury EV brand named Yangwang will be introduced, according to plans revealed last month by Chinese EV juggernaut BYD. Since then, there have been several rumours on the kind of automobiles the carmaker will be emphasising.
That didn’t last long, though, as internet spy images of an off-road SUV that is thought to be the R1- Yangwang’s first offering in its line-up appeared.
The people at SugarDesign have gone a step further by creating speculative drawings of the R1 SUV based on photographs of the disguised test mule, where the vehicle silhouette and certain design components are obvious. And it does have a striking appearance.
With short front and rear overhangs, strong pillars, large wheel arches, and plenty of ground clearance, the SUV has a boxy appearance. The complex mesh grille that covers the headlamps on the fascia adds emphasis to the design. The light signatures resemble castle lines with the DRLs split in two, one on each bonnet and the other at the bumper, on either side.
Retractable door handles, large side mirrors, angular wheel arches, and horizontal slats at the D-pillars are all hallmarks of the side profile. The roof rails, shark fin antenna, and three odd bumps at the front of the vehicle, which are meant to contain LIDAR sensors and some additional lighting, are all blacked out. The rear has a hexagonal spare wheel cover, a bumper with deep creases, and taillights that replicate the front with a matrix-like layout and vertical LED signatures.
