The all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan has been unveiled, showcasing the company’s remarkable advancements in digital technology and introducing the model’s first-ever all-electric drive.
New BMW 5 Series
As the i5, the latest generation of the world’s most successful business sedan leads the way in the upper mid-range vehicle segment toward sustainable premium mobility.
The new 5 Series Sedan features consistent electrification, an advanced iDrive display and control system with the innovative “QuickSelect” function, enhanced digital services, and an unwavering commitment to sustainability throughout its entire lifecycle, all of which reflect the Group’s ongoing transformation.
The new 5 Series Sedan will go on sale in the global market in October 2023.
This new model generation will be available in all-electric drive, plug-in hybrid systems (depending on market), and highly efficient petrol and diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan, as well as the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5, will be manufactured at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, ensuring the highest quality and precision.
- Engine:
Market-specific options will include petrol and diesel engines from BMW Group’s new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics engines, all of which will feature 48-volt mild hybrid technology and come standard with a new 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.
In Europe, the BMW 520i Sedan models will be available with a four-cylinder engine producing 153 kW/208 hp, the BMW 520d Sedan with a 145 kW/197 hp engine, and the BMW 520d xDrive Sedan with a 145 kW/197 hp engine. Outside of Europe, additional petrol engines with four and six cylinders will be available.
The model range will be expanded in spring 2024 with two plug-in hybrid variants of the latest generation, as well as a new inline six-cylinder diesel engine for the BMW 5 Series Sedan. In addition, another BMW i5 variant with electric all-wheel drive is expected to join the lineup in 2024.
- Exterior:
The new 5 Series Sedan exudes sporty elegance and a commanding presence, thanks to a clear and refined design language.
The new edition is 97 millimeters longer, 32 millimeters wider, and 36 millimeters taller than its predecessor, with dimensions of 5,060 millimeters long, 1,900 millimeters wide, and 1,515 millimeters tall. Its wheelbase has also been increased by 20 millimeters, to 2,995 millimeters.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan features a modern interpretation of its iconic twin headlights and BMW kidney grille up front. Vertically arranged LED elements serve as turn indicators and daytime driving lights.
The forward-projecting BMW kidney grille has a wide surround and optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, which adds to its distinct appearance.
A high shoulder line, meticulously designed surfaces, and two elegant character lines define the vehicle’s athletic body from the side.
Black side skirts, flush-mounted door openers, and a prominent embossed number 5 at the base of the C-pillar are all eye-catching features.
The back end exudes power and dynamism, with flat rear lights separated by a chrome strip and displaying the iconic L-shape design.
For those looking for even more dynamism, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan comes with the optional M Sport Package and M Sport Package Pro, which further enhances the car’s sporty character.
At market launch, the model range already included three BMW Individual paint finishes, giving customers a variety of options.
- Interior:
Inside the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, drivers will find ideal conditions for both daily driving enjoyment and long-distance travel.
The interior design incorporates ample space, contemporary functionality, exceptional acoustic comfort, and high-quality materials.
By incorporating digital functions, the cockpit has been thoughtfully designed, significantly reducing the number of buttons and controls compared to its predecessor.
The BMW Curved Display, a fully digital display system comprised of a 12.3-inch Information Display and a 14.9-inch Control Display, serves as the focal point.
The steering wheel has been redesigned, with a flattened lower section, haptic feedback on the control panels, and a center console selector lever.
Furthermore, the optional Interaction Bar, a backlit functional unit with a crystalline surface structure that spans the entire width of the instrument panel and door panels and includes touch-sensitive control panels, is available.
Newly designed sports seats are standard, while optional comfort seats offer extensive electrically operated adjustment options.
Notably, the new 5 Series Sedan is the brand’s first model to come standard with a fully vegan interior, including the seats, dashboard, door panels, and even the steering wheel.
Veganza seat surfaces, which have leather-like properties, can be equipped with decorative perforation as an option. Individual Merino leather upholstery in various bicolor variants is also available as an option.
BMW i5 all-electric:
The all-electric i5 is available in two variants and features significantly improved fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology.
The i5 M60 xDrive features two integrated drive units on the front and rear axles, resulting in electric all-wheel drive.
It has a powerful drive of up to 442 kW/601 hp and the hallmark M performance and distinctive design features. When using M Sport Boost or the M Launch Control function, the system torque can reach 820 Nm (605 lb-ft).
The BMW i5 M60 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph).
The i5 eDrive40, on the other hand, is powered by an electric motor that delivers a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) with the Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The eDrive40 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 193 km/h (120 mph).
The BMW i5 is available in two variants, each with a space-saving high-voltage battery located in the underbody and a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh.
In addition to efficient electric motors, the vehicle has adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for interior heating and cooling, which contributes to the vehicle’s extended range.
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive has a WLTP range of 455 – 516 kilometers (282 – 320 miles), while the i5 eDrive40 has a range of 497 – 582 kilometers (309 – 361 miles).
The new MAX RANGE function increases range by up to 25% by limiting power and speed and deactivating comfort functions when necessary.
- eCharging solutions that are cutting-edge:
The i5’s Combined Charging Unit (CCU) supports AC charging with a standard output of up to 11 kW, which can be upgraded to 22 kW as an option.
The high-voltage battery can also be charged with direct current at up to 205 kW, allowing the BMW i5’s battery charge level to be increased from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
The new i5, as well as the plug-in hybrid models, can benefit from the new Connected Home Charging system, which enables solar and load-optimized charging (stage 1) and cost-optimized charging based on dynamic electricity tariff contracts (stage 2, beginning in 2024).
