Last year, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 caused quite a stir when it powered the first Android smartphone to score over 1 million points in AnTuTu. While many smartphone manufacturers are still working to launch their first smartphones with this chip, rumors suggest that the chip will be quite expensive. As a result, the Dimensity 8000 could be crowned the true value for money king.
Digital Chat Station’s results for Dimensity 8000 show a score of around 820,000 in version V9.0.7-OB. While AnTuTu charts show that Snapdragon 888-powered smartphones range from 880,000 to 750,000, depending on RAM, internal storage, and other factors.
As a result, the new Dimensity is fairly competitive, with the initial AnTuTu scores looking promising.
Given that it is a 5 nm chip, it is comparable to the Snapdragon from last year. According to DCS, the chip has four Cortex-A78 (2.75 GHz) cores and four A55s, as well as a new Mali-G510 GPU. However, the Snapdragon 888 may not be MediaTek’s primary focus.
Since the Dimensity 8000 went after the Snapdragon 870, which was built on the 7 nm process, it is very likely that the Snapdragon 888 will be challenged by the upcoming Dimensity 8100, which is set to be released in March and promises faster clock speeds. Leaving the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the dust to compete with the Dimensity 9000.
When it comes to the GPU of the Dimensity 8000, we don’t know much about ARM’s new GPU architecture, but based on advertisements, the Mali-G510 is expected to be twice as fast and 22 percent more energy-efficient than older systems.
While it’s unclear which older GPU system is being referenced, the score of 315,000 is quite impressive. In comparison, the new Adreno 660 in the Snapdragon 888 and 888+ scores between 325,000 and 300,000 points, while the GPU in the older 870 chip scores around 250,000 points. Qualcomm appears to have some serious competition on its hands.
