Older iPhones only get new iOS updates for a limited time before Apple decides to retire them, and a report suggests which devices may be left behind when iOS 16 is released later this year.
This information was obtained through iDropNews, in a report prepared by a leaker known as AppleLeaksPro, who has a spotty track record.
Because of the source, take the information with a grain of salt, but given Apple’s history, it makes sense.
The iPhone 6s, iPhone 6S Plus, and the original iPhone SE, which all received iOS 15, are reportedly not compatible with iOS 16. These devices were made in 2015, 2015, and 2016, therefore they are quite ancient.
Apple discontinues support for previous iPhones with new iOS versions because the older hardware lacks the necessary processing power or storage capacity for the newer operating system, and this is also true in the Android world.
That’s not to say Apple will completely disregard these phones; they may still receive the occasional security update, and they’ll function perfectly fine without the latest software.
For the time being, this is merely a leak, so these phones haven’t been officially retired by Apple. However, AppleLeaksPro’s track record appears to be very accurate.
The leaker also backs up their previous claims about super-widgets, and refers to a few adjustments including a new music app and changes to Quick Actions so they work even when the phone is locked.
