It will not be a major surprise if TikTok will soon release a music streaming app of its own because it has been long overdue. Sources have discovered patent documents that indicate TikTok is indeed working on that. As a result, the business will go off against services like Apple Music, Spotify, and Deezer.
This comes after ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, submitted a trademark application to the USPTO in May for the name “TikTok Music.” The service will allegedly allow users to buy, play, share, and download music.
Users would be able to make, share, and suggest playlists as well as comment on music and broadcast audio and video live. In Australia, ByteDance previously submitted a trademark application for “TikTok Music” in November.
It’s not the first time that ByteDance has dabbled in the world of music streaming. Resso, a music streaming app by ByteDance, was released in India, Brazil, and Indonesia in 2020.
Resso’s inclusion of features like the ability to make playlists, share music on social media, and engage with the app’s community is therefore not surprising. These functions are also listed in the “TikTok Music” file. Even now, ByteDance attracts current users from TikTok to Resso.
The TikTok app in Brazil reportedly has a button that takes users to Resso so they may listen to the full version of a song they’re interested in, according to a report from The Information. This action aids in keeping users within the ByteDance ecosystem.
As of November 2021, Resso has over 40 million monthly users throughout Indonesia, Brazil, and India; this number is expected to rise if the service is made available worldwide.
Resso’s monthly active users increased by 304% between January 2021 and January 2022 in India alone, according to research by Insider published earlier this year, compared to Spotify’s growth of 38% in the same nation.
