On Thursday, Karachi fisherman carried a 20-foot-long whale shark, a protected species, to Ibrahim Hyderi village for sale.
Whale sharks are currently one of the world’s largest fish species. The fishery regulations of Sindh and Balochistan prohibit their hunting, marketing, and trading.
Local fisherman hauled the big fish to the shore after it was discovered dead at sea, according to Kamal Shah, the head of the Fisherfolk Forum’s Coastal Media Centre.
“Apparently, this whale shark perished after being hurt by a vessel in the open sea,” he explained. “Local fisherman carried it to the jetty and sold it to a local factory owner.”
Dr. Moazam Khan, the technical advisor of the WWF-Pakistan, refuted the report, claiming that fishermen hunted the endangered fish, carried it to the jetty, and then sold it in violation of the law.
“It’s quite unfortunate that fishermen murdered it. They should be prosecuted under the law,” he stated, underlining the significance of raising fisherman’s knowledge of the fish’s importance.
Fishermen in Ibrahim Hyderi, on the other hand, said that the fish died after being trapped in the net.
