Hafeez Center in Lahore Catches Fire for the Third Time

During today’s heavy rainfall, a massive fire broke out at Hafeez Center, one of Lahore’s busiest electronics markets. Thick black smoke billowed from the multi-story building in Gulberg, visible from surrounding areas. Videos on social media showed chaotic scenes as shop owners rushed to evacuate. Many attempted to salvage expensive inventory before flames engulfed their stores, adding to the turmoil.

Emergency Response Faces Challenges

Police and Rescue 1122 arrived quickly to control the blaze. However, floodwater on nearby roads hindered firefighting efforts. Smoke-filled shops and hallways, with flames spreading across multiple floors. Authorities have not yet determined the fire’s cause, but confirmed investigations will begin soon. The delay in extinguishing the fire raised concerns about inadequate emergency preparedness in the commercial hub.

Extensive Damage Feared

Preliminary reports suggest mobile and electronics shops may have suffered heavy losses. The exact extent of damage remains unknown, but traders fear significant financial setbacks due to high-value inventory. Many store owners watched helplessly as flames consumed their merchandise. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far, but the economic impact could be severe for business owners.

History of Repeated Fire Incidents

This is not the first fire at Hafeez Center. In October 2020, a major blaze damaged over 400 shops, causing estimated losses of Rs 2.5–3 billion. The fire raged for 14 hours, requiring Navy teams, Rangers, and multiple fire brigades. Authorities later sealed the building due to safety violations and structural weaknesses, highlighting long-standing negligence.

Previous Fire in 2010

Another fire occurred in 2010, affecting first-floor shops. Investigators blamed a short circuit and gasoline cans for igniting the flames. Five shops were destroyed, raising alarms about poor fire safety measures. Despite these incidents, no significant improvements were made, leaving the market vulnerable to recurring disasters. Traders now demand stricter enforcement of safety regulations.

Traders Demand Accountability

Frustrated shop owners accuse authorities of ignoring fire safety protocols. Many claim the building lacks proper exits, fire extinguishers, and alarms. Repeated incidents suggest systemic failures in oversight. Traders urge the government to enforce building codes and ensure such tragedies are prevented. Without reforms, Hafeez Center remains at risk of future disasters.

Economic Impact on Businesses

The fire’s financial toll could devastate small and medium-sized traders. Many rely on the market for their livelihoods, with some storing lifetime savings in inventory. Insurance coverage is limited, leaving business owners vulnerable. The recurring fires highlight the need for better risk management and financial safeguards for commercial markets in Pakistan.

Calls for Immediate Action

Experts stress the need for fire-resistant construction, regular safety audits, and emergency training. Authorities must upgrade infrastructure and penalize violations to prevent future incidents. The repeated fires at Hafeez Center serve as a wake-up call for Lahore’s commercial zones. Without urgent reforms, more markets could face similar catastrophes.

Conclusion: A Pattern of Negligence

The latest fire at Hafeez Center underscores a dangerous pattern of negligence. Despite past tragedies, safety measures remain inadequate. Traders, officials, and urban planners must collaborate to enforce stricter regulations. Only proactive measures can protect lives and businesses from such disasters in the future.
