Google Chrome surpassed Safari as the fastest browser on Macs with M1 processors three months ago. Now Google claims it’s even faster, claiming a 20% improvement in Apple’s own Speedometer measure.
When Google took charge in March, it said that it had completed the task using a MacBook Pro with a ten-core M1 Max CPU and 64GB of RAM.
Is that the same Google computer as before? We don’t know because the Google Chrome team hasn’t shared any information this time.
What we do know is that Chrome received a 300 on the Speedometer 2.0 test in March. This time, it was increased to 360, which is a significant increase.
To put that into perspective, a gaming PC is equipped with an i9-9900K processor and an RTX 3070 graphics card. In Incognito in Google Chrome M102, the same Speedometer 2.0 benchmark scores 183. That’s two more points that received with Chrome M99, but it’s still inside the acceptable range.
The idea isn’t simply that Google Chrome is faster on macOS than any other browser. On Windows 11 PC, it’s also faster than any other browser. On the same assessment, Firefox scores a paltry 139.
That means the enhancements to Google Chrome that make it the quickest on Macs with M1 processors also apply to whatever other PC you use it on.
These enhancements are carried across to the mobile app, with Android Police discovering that Chrome on Android reduces page load times by 15%.
You may have reservations about Chrome’s hold on the modern web, but as long as it remains fast, users will continue to use it.
