Zoom starts rolling out end-to-end encryption feature

Zoom has started rolling out the end-to-end encryption feature for both its paid and free users globally. The feature is available on Zoom desktop client 5.4 for Mac and PC, Zoom Android and iOS apps. It is also available on Zoom rooms but not its web client or third-party clients that use Zoom SDK. Zoom noted that when users enable the end-to-end encryption nobody except the participant, not even Zoom’s meeting servers have access to the encryption keys that user can encrypt the meeting.

This is just the initial launch of the four phases and is in technical preview. That means Zoom is open to feedback for the newly launched end-to-end. encryption feature for 30 days. However, user can available the feature even after the 30-day technical preview period. The end-to-end encryption feature is available both for those who join and those who host sessions with up to 200 participants.

Individual Zoom users should determine whether they need these features before enabling this version of E2EE in their meetings.


The end-to-end encryption feature provides an added layer of security. But some Zoom functionality is limited in this version. Individual Zoom users should determine whether they need these features before enabling this version of E2EE in their meetings. The features that get limited after enabling end to end encryption in Zoom includes, cloud recording, streaming, live transcription, Breakout Rooms, polling, 1:1 private chat, and meeting reactions.

So, in case users do not use these features. As they can go ahead and enable the end-to-end encryption feature. If they feel, they cannot do without the above-stated tools, they should wait for the upcoming versions of end-to-end encryption. To enable the end-to-end encryption feature for their use, users should follow the given steps:

— Sign in to the Zoom web portal.

— In the navigation panel, click on Settings.

— Click on the Meeting tab.

— Under Security, verify that end-to-end encryption is active

— If the setting is disabled, click the toggle to enable it. If a verification dialog displays, click Turn On to verify the change.

Zoom notes that if the option is grayed out, the app can locked at either the group or account level. You need to contact your Zoom admin.

— Under Security, choose the default encryption type.

— Click on Save.

End-to-end encryption is mandatory and they will be able to change that setting at the user, group, or even entire account level. Users will see a green padlock on their screen if they are in an end-to-end encrypted conversation.
