YouTube is currently running an experiment to discourage users from using ad blockers while using the platform. Viewers have noticed a pop-up message referred to as the “three strikes” warning that recently began appearing when browsing the site with an ad blocker enabled.
YouTube with an ad Blocker
This warning has been depicted in multiple screenshots on Reddit and Twitter. The message makes it clear that the YouTube “video player will be blocked after 3 videos” unless the ad blocker is turned off or the viewer subscribes to YouTube Premium.
Here is what the notice says:
It looks like you may be using an ad blocker. Video playback will be blocked unless YT is whitelisted or the ad blocker is disabled.
Ads allow it to stay free for billions of users worldwide. You can go ad-free with Premium account, and creators can still get paid from your subscription.
The Google-owned platform’s experiment has been confirmed, with the company reiterating that viewers will face disruptions if they continue to ignore requests to enable ads on it.
In a statement provided to Tom’s Guide, YT clarified the situation:
We are currently running a limited global experiment that encourages viewers with ad blockers enabled to either enable ads on YouTube or explore Premium. Detecting ad blockers is a common practice, and many other content providers frequently ask viewers to disable ad blockers.
The number of users who have received the notification, as well as the specific countries where the trial is being conducted, has not been disclosed by YT. It’s also unclear how to regain access to the site after being barred from watching.
Given that advertisements are a significant source of revenue for YT, it is understandable that the platform is putting a premium on viewer engagement.
Over the last three quarters, the platform has seen a consistent decline in revenue, which serves as a significant motivator for taking a more assertive approach.
