WhatsApp Restores Voice & Video Calls in Saudi Arabia After 6-Year Ban

WhatsApp users in Saudi Arabia can now make voice and video calls again after a six-year restriction. The unexpected reactivation of these features has raised questions about whether this change is permanent or temporary. The Saudi government had previously blocked these services due to regulatory policies, limiting users’ communication options within the country and internationally.

No Prior Official Announcement on the Restoration

Surprisingly, there was no official statement from Saudi authorities before lifting the restrictions. The move has left many users speculating about the future of WhatsApp’s calling features in the kingdom. While some believe this marks a step toward greater digital freedom, others remain skeptical, fearing the possibility of another ban in the future.

Expert Insights on the Policy Shift

Technology expert Abdullah Al-Subaei believes that restoring WhatsApp calls aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing digital transformation. The country has been actively enhancing its telecommunications and digital infrastructure, allowing for improved communication services. This shift could indicate a broader effort to modernize Saudi Arabia’s technology sector and provide better services to its citizens and expatriates.

WhatsApp’s History of Voice and Video Calling in Saudi Arabia

WhatsApp, the world’s leading messaging app, launched voice calls in 2015 and video calls in 2016. However, in 2019, Saudi Arabia blocked these features due to regulatory concerns. The sudden restoration of these services has reignited discussions about the government’s stance on internet-based communication apps. Despite users celebrating the change, authorities have yet to confirm whether the update is permanent.

Uncertainty Over the Long-Term Availability of Calls

Although WhatsApp users are enjoying the ability to make calls, uncertainty looms over how long the service will remain available. The lack of government confirmation has left people wondering if this move is a temporary test or a permanent policy shift. Given the past restrictions, users remain cautious about fully relying on the service for long-term communication.

Saudi Arabia Emerges as a Top Travel Destination for Pakistanis

Beyond WhatsApp’s restoration, Saudi Arabia has gained attention for another reason: it has become the top destination for Pakistani travelers. According to the travel app Wego, the number of Pakistani visitors to the kingdom has increased by 100% annually. The rise in travel is driven by religious tourism and Saudi Arabia’s growing investment in its tourism sector.

Saudi Arabia’s Expanding Tourism Industry

Saudi Arabia’s tourism industry is undergoing rapid expansion, fueled by ambitious mega-projects such as NEOM, a futuristic city on the Red Sea. Another major initiative, The Red Sea Project, emphasizes luxury and eco-tourism, positioning Saudi Arabia as a leading destination for global travelers. These projects are expected to redefine tourism standards and attract millions of visitors in the coming years.

Vision 2030 and Its Impact on Tourism

As part of its Vision 2030 strategy, Saudi Arabia is working to diversify its economy and promote tourism. The kingdom remains a favored destination for thousands of Pakistanis who travel for religious duties, especially during Ramadan. Many visitors perform Umrah and visit the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, contributing to the country’s booming tourism sector.

Wego’s New Travel Booking Platform

Recognizing the growing interest in Saudi Arabia as a travel destination, Wego has launched its online travel booking platform, “Book on Wego.” This feature allows Pakistani users to plan their trips seamlessly. With more Pakistanis choosing Saudi Arabia as their preferred destination, the tourism industry is expected to experience sustained growth, further reinforcing the kingdom’s position as a global travel hub.
