JazzCash digital payments are about to get a major global boost. On July 2, 2026, VEON (Nasdaq: VEON) and Mastercard announced a strategic collaboration to expand accessible financial services across Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan. For Pakistani users, this deal matters because JazzCash, the country’s largest mobile wallet, sits at the very heart of VEON’s Pakistan business.

What Is the VEON and Mastercard Deal?

VEON is a Nasdaq-listed digital operator that runs Jazz and JazzCash in Pakistan. On July 2, it announced a formal collaboration with Mastercard to build the next generation of financial services across four emerging markets, with Pakistan named as one of them.

The partnership brings together two very different strengths. VEON contributes its local digital platforms, customer data, and distribution reach. Mastercard brings its global payments network, security technology, and financial expertise. Together, they plan to explore a wide range of new services.

These planned services include AI-powered credit scoring, embedded finance, digital wallets, merchant payment tools, loyalty programmes, and cross-border remittances. All of this is subject to regulatory approvals in each market, including from Pakistan’s State Bank of Pakistan.

Why JazzCash Digital Payments Are at the Centre of This

JazzCash is VEON’s financial services arm in Pakistan. Its size is hard to ignore. The platform now serves 60 million registered customers and processed PKR 16.8 trillion in gross transaction value in the year to March 2026. That figure is roughly equal to 13% of Pakistan’s entire GDP. It also recently onboarded its one-millionth merchant on Pakistan’s national Raast QR payment network.

JazzCash already has a working relationship with Mastercard. Earlier this year, JazzCash customers could add their debit cards to Google Wallet. The platform already offers a Mastercard debit card to its users. In fact, JazzCash won the ‘Pioneering Telco to Launch Tap on Phone’ award from Mastercard at the Edge 2024 event in Dubai. So this new partnership deepens a connection that already exists.

The collaboration also fits into a bigger wave of financial services that VEON is building on JazzCash. Just weeks before this deal, in June 2026, JazzCash and Mobilink Bank launched Government Treasury Bills directly inside the JazzCash app, starting from just PKR 5,000. This shows that VEON wants JazzCash to go far beyond basic payments.

What Could Change for Pakistani Users and Merchants?

The deal is still in its early stages, with pilots planned first in Ukraine and Kazakhstan. But Pakistan is named explicitly in the agreement, which means these services are on the roadmap. Here is what each group could gain.

For Everyday Consumers

Many Pakistanis have a mobile wallet but no credit card and no formal credit history. AI-powered credit scoring, one of the services this deal is meant to explore, could change that. It uses data from how you transact on your phone to judge if you qualify for a loan or a financial product, even if you have never used a bank. This could open up credit, insurance, and investment tools to millions of people who are currently locked out.

For Small Businesses and Merchants

JazzCash digital payments already reach one million QR-enabled merchants across Pakistan. If Mastercard’s merchant services and loyalty tools plug into that network, small shop owners could benefit from more customers paying digitally, better fraud protection, and access to business credit based on their sales data.

For Cross-Border Transactions

Pakistan receives billions of dollars in remittances every year from Pakistanis working abroad. Mastercard’s global network covers over 200 countries and territories. If the two companies build remittance tools together on JazzCash, sending money home from the Gulf, UK, or the US could become faster and cheaper.

The Bigger Picture for Pakistan’s Fintech Market

Pakistan’s digital payments space is busy and growing fast. Raast, the State Bank of Pakistan’s instant payment system launched in 2021, now ties together banks and wallets in one interoperable network. The State Bank has reported that digital channels now account for 88% of all retail transactions in Pakistan by volume. JazzCash competes closely with Easypaisa, whose registered user base also crossed 59 million by the end of 2025.

A Mastercard-powered upgrade to JazzCash could push the competition harder. If JazzCash gains better credit scoring tools, a stronger cross-border remittance product, and deeper loyalty programmes, it raises the bar for every other player in Pakistan’s fintech market. This is good news for Pakistani consumers because competition usually drives better products and lower prices.

It is worth noting that this partnership is still exploratory. VEON said all planned financial services will be introduced subject to relevant regulatory approvals and requirements. Nothing is live yet for Pakistani users. But the direction is clear: VEON is trying to turn JazzCash from a payments app into a full financial platform, and Mastercard’s global rails are a big part of that plan.

If you already use Jazz services, you might want to read about how Jazz’s choice number feature lets you pick your SIM, another example of how Jazz is giving users more control over their mobile experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VEON and Mastercard deal about?

VEON and Mastercard announced on July 2, 2026, that they will collaborate to build inclusive digital financial services across four markets: Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan. The deal covers services like AI credit scoring, digital wallets, merchant tools, and remittances.

How does this deal affect JazzCash users in Pakistan?

Pakistan is one of the four named markets. Since JazzCash is VEON’s digital payments platform in Pakistan, users could eventually see new products powered by Mastercard’s global network. These may include better credit access, cross-border remittances, and merchant loyalty tools, though all of this is subject to State Bank of Pakistan approval.

When will new JazzCash features from this deal go live?

The initial pilot programmes are planned for Ukraine and Kazakhstan first. Pakistan is included in the partnership agreement, but no specific launch date has been given for new features in Pakistan. The timeline will also depend on regulatory clearance from Pakistani authorities.

Is JazzCash already connected to Mastercard?

Yes. JazzCash already offers a Mastercard debit card to its users, and its customers can add those cards to Google Wallet for tap-to-pay. JazzCash also won a Mastercard award in 2024 for launching tap-on-phone payments. The new strategic deal deepens this existing relationship at a platform level.
