Uber Eats, a food delivery service, has partnered with Serve Robotics, an autonomous delivery firm, to deploy as many as 2,000 of Serve Robotics’ robots in various regions around the United States.
The pilot project between Uber and Serve, which began a year ago in West Hollywood, is now being expanded. More than 30 percent more orders were delivered by Uber robots through Serve in the past month, and the number of Los Angeles restaurants using the service has grown to more than 200.
Dr. Ali Kashani, co-founder and CEO of Serve Robotics, described the company as “thrilled” to further its cooperation with Uber.
Dr. Kashani said in a statement, “This partnership is a major step towards mass commercialization of robotics for autonomous delivery.” We can’t wait to keep working with Uber to roll out this cutting-edge service to many more U.S. cities.
Uber will get robots with level 4 autonomy
The company Serve claims their sidewalk robots are capable of “Level 4” autonomy, which is defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers(opens in a new tab) as the ability to handle all aspects of driving without human involvement. Tech Crunch(opens in a new tab) reports that the robots can “reroute” around obstacles and prevent crashes with vehicles.
The Arkansas Walmart and the Vancouver Pizza Hut have both participated in the company’s experimental programmes. Together with 7-Eleven(opens in a new tab), Serve has been providing automated sidewalk delivery in Los Angeles since 2021.
