On Friday morning, two Pakistani female mountaineers made history by reaching the summit of the world’s second highest peak, the 8,611-meter-high K2.
Samina Baig and her team members ascended the mighty K2, making her the first Pakistani woman to do so. Naila Kiani became the second person to reach the summit after Samina. No other Pakistani woman had ever accomplished such an achievement.
On Friday morning, several other climbers from different countries, including female climbers from Oman, Lebanon, Iran, and Taiwan, summited the peak.
The summit push began late last night after rope fixing teams finished their work, and the first group reached the summit of K2 around 3 a.m.
The team of Pakistan’s 31-year-old climber Samina Baig confirmed that she and other Pakistani mountaineers summited K2 on Friday at 7:42 a.m. PST.
“We are extremely proud to announce that Samina Baig and her strong Pakistani team successfully summited the world’s most fascinating and dangerous mountain known as the Savage Mountain the world’s second and Pakistan’s tallest mountain K2 8,611 meters this morning at 7:42am,” said Samina’s team on the ground. “Grateful and blessed that K2 allowed her to stand atop this incredible mountain,” the statement added.
Samina Baig is from Shimshal, a remote village in Gilgit Valley. In 2013, she became the first Pakistani woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Eid Muhammad, Bulbul Karim, Ahmed Baig, Rizwan Dad, Waqar Ali, and Akber Hussain Sadpara also climbed with Samina. Pakistan’s Naila Kiani reached the summit less than three hours after Samina. “Yes, Alhamdulillah,” Naila texted this reporter, confirming her summit via satellite communication device.
