To cut travel time between Dubai and Sharjah to only 12 minutes, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is investing $102 million (AED 374 million) in roads and infrastructure. Project to improve the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road has been awarded by RTA as part of this program.
Four bridges, covering a total of three kilometers, will need to be built for this purpose. The placement of these bridges has been carefully planned to reduce traffic congestion and improve vehicular traffic flow.
Dubai includes bridges in the project
The intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street will be the site of the first bridge, which will span 960 meters and have two lanes. It would allow for the smooth movement of 8,000 cars per hour between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
Two-laned and spanning 660 meters, the second bridge will connect drivers on westbound Garn Al Sabkha Street with those traveling to Al Qusais and Sharjah through Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It’ll be able to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour at peak times in Dubai.
The length of the third bridge, connecting Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Yalayis Road, heading toward Jebel Ali Port, will be 700 meters. It will likewise have two lanes. Additionally, 3,200 vehicles per hour can use it without issue.
A two-lane bridge spanning 680 meters connects Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road with the service road that leads to Dubai Production City. It’ll be able to accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour at peak times.
There will be new roadways as well
In addition to the bridges, the project will entail the construction of 7 kilometers of new roadway, improvements to surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and the installation of new infrastructure such as streetlights, traffic signals and systems, rainwater drainage networks, and irrigation systems.
When finished, the project is anticipated to save travel times and distances by 40%. Drivers headed for Al Qusais and Sharjah will be able to cut their travel time from 20 minutes down to just 12 minutes during peak hours by taking Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The project will also shorten the time it takes to get from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Road, which is an important link in the chain leading to Jebel Ali Port, by 70 percent. It will take only seven minutes to get there instead of twenty-one.
