Creating the perfect video game with the perfect story takes time and effort; fortunately, GDC 2022 has the workshops you need to hone your storytelling and game design skills.
The Game Developers Conference is pleased to announce that the “Storytelling Fundamentals Workshop” and “Game Design Workshop” will be held at GDC 2022 in San Francisco this March.
Some of the industry’s brightest minds in storytelling and game design share their knowledge while guiding attendees through a series of hands-on exercises in these workshops.
Evan Skolnick, a writer for Marvel and Telltale Games, will host the “Storytelling Fundamentals Workshop.” Evan covers the narrative structure, vibrant character development, storytelling best practices, and more in this comprehensive tutorial and workshop through a combination of lectures, skill-building exercises, and case studies.
This workshop is intended for game developers who have little experience with story development but are familiar with the concept of landmark story-centric games and their contributions to the video game space.
Because nearly every member of a development team eventually contributes to the implementation of a game’s narrative, Evan treats every team member as a potential storyteller and provides the tools for game developers to adopt a shared story language.
Attendees learn about the role of narrative in games, as well as the rules and tools for characterization, exposition delivery, believability, and audience impact.
A large panel of game designers, including Riot Games’ Marc LeBlanc, Niantic’s Kellee Santiago, and Orange Monkey Games’ Eleanor Todd, will explore the day-to-day craft of game design through hands-on activities, group discussion, analysis, and critique in “Game Design Workshop.”
Participants will be immersed in the iterative process of game design and will discover design concepts that will help them think more clearly about their designs and create better games.
Each day, attendees will work in small groups on two design exercises. Each exercise will require the group to iteratively modify an existing game design in order to achieve a new goal. This could include adding a new feature, accommodating a requirement, or correcting a design flaw.
Attendees will be challenged to analyze and identify the design principles at work in a game, as well as to think flexibly and creatively while working within design constraints—all while applying the Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics (MDA) framework to their design process.
The workshop is held over two days (Day 1 and Day 2). Attendees may attend either session… or both!
For All-Access or Summits pass holders, the “Storytelling Fundamentals Workshop” and “Game Design Workshop” are available. Don’t pass up these fantastic hands-on sessions. Register for GDC 2022 today.
GDC 2022 will be held March 21-25, 2022, at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, with a virtual event taking place March 21-April 1.
