The largest manufacturer of EV batteries in the world, CATL, will begin manufacturing a new battery for electric vehicles that has a range of more than 620 miles (or almost 1,000 kilometers). The new battery, known as Qilin, will start manufacturing in 2023.
Qilin, according to the battery manufacturer, is 50% more efficient than typical lithium-ion batteries. For comparison, the $169,000 Lucid Air is the longest-range EV currently on the market and has a range of slightly over 830 kilometers.
Qilin battery packs, according to CATL, benefit from their distinctive shape since they are able to hold a lot more energy than conventional batteries. The Qilin will be 13% more powerful than Tesla’s most recent battery design, it was noted, and boasts a 255 watt-hour energy density per kilogram.
Additionally, CATL claimed that their new battery will be the quickest charging battery on the market, capable of charging from 10% to 80% in under 10 minutes. These are only speculative facts, though, as the battery is still undergoing development.
Sources claim that Hozon and Li Auto, two Chinese automakers, have already shown interest in employing Qilin battery packs in their vehicles. Additionally, rumors claim that US-based EV manufacturers are considering adopting these batteries in their vehicles but are delaying action.
