The Boring Company (TBC) has raised $675 million in a Series C fundraising round headed by Vy Capital and Sequoia Capital, with Valor Equity Partners, Founders Fund, 8VC, Craft Ventures, and DFJ Growth also participating.
The Boring Company is valued at $5.675 billion as a result of the fundraising. The monies will be utilised to hire personnel, scale boring machine production, and construct tunnels, according to TBC.
The Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) Loop is a fully operational tunnel system owned by The Boring Company.
It connects the new West Hall addition to the South and Central Halls. TBC is also working on a project in Las Vegas called the Vegas Loop. The Las Vegas Loop will link 51 stations around the city, including those on the Strip.
Prufrock-1 emerged from the earth near Resorts World, where one of the system’s stations will be located, in February 2022, marking an important milestone in Elon Musk’s Boring Company’s Vegas Loop construction.
Prufrock is TBC’s next-generation boring equipment, which will help with future tunnelling operations.
“Prufrock is a next-generation Tunnel Boring Machine that can build mega-infrastructure projects in weeks rather than years at a fraction of the cost. Prufrock-2, the current iteration of Prufrock, is planned to mine at a rate of up to 1 mile per week, implying that a tunnel the length of the Las Vegas strip (about 4 miles) might be completed in a month,” according to TBC.
Prufrock-3 is also said to be speedier than its older brothers, according to the business. Prufrock-3’s medium-term ambition is to bore tunnels at 1/10 human walking pace, or 7 miles per day, according to TBC.
“In the medium run, if each Prufrock-2 mines one mile per week and TBC develops one new Prufrock machine per month, TBC will add 600 miles of capacity per year,” TBC calculated. “As a point of comparison, in the last 20 years, less than 20 miles of underground subway tunnel have been built in the United States.”
A tunnelling project in San Bernardino, California, has been approved by The Boring Company, in addition to its initiatives in Vegas.
It has also begun talks with Fort Lauderdale and San Antonio on tunnels. TBC is also awaiting permits from the cities of Kyle and Austin for project ideas.
More personnel will be required by the Boring Company in order to complete more tunnels and projects.
To grow Loop projects, TBC plans to considerably increase staffing across its engineering, operations, and production departments.
