The highest flagpole in Lahore was officially inaugurated during a ceremony attended by Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who also underlined that private donations, not money from the provincial exchequer, will be used to pay for it.
The chief minister’s comments were in response to reports that construction on a 400 million rupee project to build a 500-foot flagpole at Liberty Roundabout in the provincial capital had begun.
In an interview with the news agency, Mohsin Naqvi explained that the government intended for the flagpole to be the tallest at 600 feet, adding that “not a single penny would be spent on it from the government’s accounts.”
The chief minister stated that the project’s funding is coming from the private sector and that, assuming promises are received in a timely manner, the ground-breaking took place on August 14.

In addition, Naqvi argued that the plan would not cost the government’s predicted Rs. 400 million, but rather that the private sector would shoulder half of that expense. The project, according to him, will be finished in four months.
He added that the project would include all of its extras, such as the podium and flag at the Liberty roundabout.
Despite the chief minister’s continued optimism for the project, the government saw it as a fruitless endeavor.
An official with intimate knowledge of the project said that the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) had originally received the suggestion from the caretaker government to build the highest flagpole.
The group spent a brief period of time brainstorming ways to achieve the government’s “ambitious goal”. He claimed that the PHA’s incapacity to complete this “mammoth task” was the largest obstacle, aside from the funding that would come from the government.
Details of Flagpole
The concept, according to him, called for a 500-foot-tall flagpole, a big platform, dancing fountains, both hard and soft landscaping, and a sitting area.
Ali Nawaz Malik, the secretary for information in Punjab, spoke to the project as a whole, emphasizing that it would also function as a tourism attraction.
But he added that, to his knowledge, this initiative was on hold.
The tallest flagpole in the world is in Cairo, Egypt, and measures 662.57 feet; Krestovsky Island in Saint Petersburg has the second-tallest flagpole, standing at 589 ft.
