Sualeh Asif Cursor, two words that have sent a wave of pride through Pakistan’s tech community. On June 16, 2026, SpaceX confirmed it would buy Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, in an all-stock deal announced at Cursor’s Compile keynote, valuing the AI coding startup at $60 billion. For a country that has long debated whether its talent can compete on the world stage, this deal is a clear, loud answer.

Who is Sualeh Asif?

Asif is originally from Karachi, Pakistan, where he represented the country in the International Math Olympiad from 2016 to 2018. He attended Nixor College in Karachi before enrolling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Michael Truell founded Anysphere straight out of MIT, with no prior startups and no industry AI background. The company was incorporated in 2022 while they were students at MIT. That was less than four years ago. Today, the company they built together is worth $60 billion.

Asif has since entered the Forbes billionaires list with an estimated net worth of about $1.3 billion. Former IT minister Umar Saif described him as “a self-made kid from a middle-class family in Karachi” who “studied at MIT, started a hugely impactful company, changed the way people write code, now worth over $1 billion at the age of 26.”

What is Cursor and why does it matter?

Cursor’s main product is an AI coding agent and software development environment. Its agent features can search across a codebase, edit files, run terminal commands, and carry out multi-step programming tasks from natural-language instructions. In simple terms: a developer types what they want the code to do, and Cursor writes it. It is one of the most useful AI tools in the world right now for software engineers.

Cursor is growing faster than any SaaS company in the history of the tech industry. For comparison, Slack took seven years to reach its first billion in revenue. Cursor managed it in roughly 18 months. Today, Cursor has around 300 employees and is generating over $4 billion in annual recurring revenue.

Despite being founded in 2022, nearly two in three Fortune 500 companies now use Cursor. That includes names like Nvidia, Adobe, Uber, and Shopify.

The Sualeh Asif Cursor deal with SpaceX explained

On April 21, 2026, xAI announced that it struck a deal with Cursor to have the right to acquire the company for $60 billion later this year, or to pay $10 billion for work they are doing together. Then on June 16, SpaceX announced that it was exercising this purchase right in an all-stock deal to buy Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere, which is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.

The acquisition is tied to Cursor’s compute and training partnership with xAI’s Colossus infrastructure and positions SpaceX to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic in developer tools. The deal gives Cursor access to SpaceX’s Colossus data centers in Mississippi and Tennessee, while SpaceX, widely seen as lacking a significant AI workforce, adds a leading consumer product with deep enterprise distribution.

Cursor’s new model has more than 1.5 trillion parameters and is being pre-trained from scratch on xAI’s Colossus supercomputer cluster using more than 100,000 GPUs. That level of computing power is something very few companies in the world can access.

From Karachi to a $60 billion exit: the Pakistan angle

Sualeh Asif’s story has hit Pakistan’s tech community hard, and for good reason. It is not just inspirational, it is instructive. His path tells us something specific about what it takes to build at the highest level.

Venture capital investors and tech experts have pointed to the gap between local talent and the availability of capital, infrastructure, and policy support, arguing that such constraints continue to drive entrepreneurs abroad. Pakistan’s talent has never been the problem. What the country lacks is the ecosystem to support that talent locally.

Laeeq Ahmad, founder of Pakistan’s venture capital firm Sarmayacar, said the country is underestimating its talent. “Millions of Pakistanis left for better futures and the government is happy because they are sending remittances from abroad,” he noted, adding that policy-level changes are needed to incentivise those who dare to dream and make an impact.

Bilal bin Saqib, Chairperson of the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority, called it “a profoundly proud moment for Pakistan, and undeniable proof for our youth that there is no ceiling to what they can achieve.”

The honest question Pakistan’s policymakers and investors need to face is this: Asif had to leave to build this. He needed MIT’s network, Silicon Valley’s venture capital, and access to massive computing infrastructure. None of those things exist at scale in Pakistan today. MIT’s startup ecosystem is one of the most powerful in the world, and it gave Asif the environment to meet his co-founders, raise early funding, and compete globally. Pakistan has the math. It does not yet have the machine.

That is not a counsel for despair. It is a roadmap. Asif’s experience at MIT provided access to capital, computing power, and a supportive ecosystem, contrasting with gaps at home. Pakistan does not lack talent but the infrastructure to support it, and with the right policies and investment, similar successes could emerge domestically.

Pakistan currently has Pakistan freelancer earnings near $1 billion, showing that the raw coding talent base is real and growing. The missing piece is converting that talent pool into product companies that scale globally, rather than hour-by-hour freelance gigs.

What this deal means for the AI coding market

SpaceX’s acquisition of Cursor would value the AI coding startup at $60 billion, more than double its November 2025 valuation. The implied valuation jump is roughly 14,900%: from $400 million in August 2024 to $60 billion in just under two years. That is one of the fastest value-creation stories in the history of technology.

Along with OpenAI and Anthropic, Cursor is one of several Silicon Valley startups that have drawn waves of developers by using AI to automate coding. The deal could give xAI, the Grok chatbot maker that SpaceX merged with in February, a stronger foothold in the AI coding market where it has so far lagged rivals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Sualeh Asif and where is he from?

Sualeh Asif is 26 years old, born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan. He attended Nixor College in Karachi and later moved to MIT, where he represented Pakistan in the International Math Olympiad from 2016 to 2018. He co-founded Cursor with three MIT classmates and is now a billionaire.

Did SpaceX actually buy Cursor or just get an option?

On June 16, 2026, SpaceX announced that it was exercising its purchase right in an all-stock deal to buy Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. So yes, SpaceX has moved past the option stage and signed a definitive agreement.

What does Cursor do?

Cursor is an AI-powered code editor. Its main product is an AI coding agent and software development environment. Its agent features can search across a codebase, edit files, run terminal commands, and carry out multi-step programming tasks from natural-language instructions. Developers use it to write and fix code much faster than they could by hand.

Can Pakistani developers use Cursor?

Cursor offers a free tier with limited AI features, a Pro plan at $20 per month, a Business plan at $40 per user per month, and an Ultra plan at $200 per month. Pakistani developers can sign up and use the free or paid plans right now. Many already do, and Sualeh Asif’s story is a reminder that the tools being built by the world’s best engineers are accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
