Alex Neill, a supporter of consumer rights, filed a lawsuit against Sony. According to Sky News, the Japanese behemoth is charged with breaking the rules of the competition by abusing its market dominance and putting unfair terms and conditions on publishers and game creators, which led to an increase in the selling price of games for consumers.
The 30% commission Sony collects from PlayStation Store sales is the source of the argument’s claim that Sony is “ripping consumers off.” Long been a source of debate, especially when it comes to Apple, which likewise levies a 30% cut from creators who sell games on their individual storefronts. The legal disputes between Epic and the iPhone manufacturer are widely known. Epic likes to emphasize that it only charges developers a 12% fee.
According to the lawsuit, users have been overcharged $5.9 billion ($5.9 billion) for PS Store titles and DLC over the past six years. Nine million people, according to the report, have been impacted. Each victim might earn between $80 and $663 in damages if the claim is successful.
“Gaming is now the biggest entertainment industry in the UK, ahead of TV, video, and music and many vulnerable people rely on gaming for community and connection. The actions of Sony are costing millions of people who can’t afford it, particularly when we’re in the midst of a cost of living crisis and the consumer purse is being squeezed like never before,” said Neill.
