The Sky47 data center is now open. On July 24, 2026, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir jointly inaugurated Sky47 Karakoram One in Islamabad, Pakistan’s largest AI-ready, sovereign cloud facility to date. It is a major step in the country’s push to run its own digital infrastructure rather than depend on servers abroad.

What Is the Sky47 Data Center and Why Does It Matter?

Sky47 Karakoram One is not just another server room. As Pakistan watches the global AI race accelerate, having local compute power becomes critical. This facility gives Pakistani businesses, banks, hospitals, and government agencies a place to run AI workloads and store sensitive data without sending it to servers in the US, Europe, or elsewhere.

According to officials, Karakoram One will allow government institutions, private companies, banks, telecom operators and global cloud service providers to securely host servers and sensitive data within Pakistan. That is the core idea behind data sovereignty: your data stays under your country’s laws, not someone else’s.

IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja called the launch the beginning of a new era for artificial intelligence in Pakistan. She said the facility would unlock fresh economic opportunities by enabling local AI innovation at scale.

Key Facts About Sky47 Karakoram One

  • Capacity: 8.5 megawatts (MW) of operational power, making it the largest data centre of its kind in Pakistan right now.
  • Standards: Built to Tier III/IV specifications with 99.982% uptime, N+1 architecture, and precision liquid cooling.
  • Location: Capital Smart City area, Islamabad/Rawalpindi corridor.
  • Technology partner: Chinese telecom giant ZTE contributed to the project’s build-out.
  • Parent company: Sky47 Limited is a majority-owned subsidiary of Mari Energies Limited, listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).
  • Connectivity: The platform connects with multiple internet service providers and international submarine cable networks for fast, uninterrupted access.

Three Cities, One Sovereign Network

Karakoram One is only the start. The full Sky47 vision covers a three-city network. A 5MW data centre at Karachi’s Port Qasim is already under development and is expected to be ready by September 2026. A Lahore node is also planned. Together, the three sites will provide geographic redundancy, meaning if one city faces a power cut or disaster, services continue from another location. This kind of resilience is standard in mature digital economies and Pakistan has long needed it.

Looking further ahead, the Sky47 campus in Islamabad is designed to scale to over 50MW, with more than 3,000 rack capacity, enough headroom to grow as demand for AI computing and cloud hosting rises across the region.

What This Means for Businesses and Developers

For a startup, a bank, or a hospital in Pakistan, the practical change is simple: they no longer have to choose between expensive foreign cloud bills and the risk of data leaving the country. The Sky47 data center offers sovereign cloud infrastructure, AI computing, cybersecurity solutions, enterprise hosting, and managed tech services, all under one roof, inside Pakistan.

The facility supports artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computing, while also protecting sensitive national and commercial data. That combination is exactly what Pakistani companies need to build and run serious AI products locally, rather than just consuming AI tools built abroad.

PM Shehbaz praised the engineers and institutions involved, saying the project was built in record time and showed the best talent from both Pakistan’s military and civilian sectors working together. He said determination and unity could turn ambitious goals into reality.

How Sky47 Fits Pakistan’s $1 Billion AI Roadmap

The Sky47 inauguration did not happen in isolation. Earlier in February 2026, PM Shehbaz had announced a $1 billion national commitment to AI by 2030 at the Indus AI Summit, alongside the Islamabad AI Declaration. That plan covers AI education in schools, 1,000 fully funded PhD scholarships in AI, training one million non-IT professionals in AI skills, and building the sovereign compute infrastructure that AI workloads need.

The Sky47 data center is the physical backbone that makes those plans real. Without local compute power, Pakistan’s AI ambitions would remain mostly policy documents. Now there is an actual facility where those workloads can run. The government’s Digital Nation Pakistan vision, under which PM Shehbaz has directed a shift from a services-led economy to an AI-powered growth model, gets a concrete asset to point to.

Pakistan is not alone in this race. China’s AI advances are moving fast, and countries across the Global South are scrambling to build their own compute base. Pakistan’s move to open a sovereign AI cloud gives it a foundation, but scaling it quickly and affordably will be the real test.

What Comes Next

Watch for the Karachi Port Qasim facility to come online in September 2026. Also watch whether global cloud providers, which currently run Pakistani workloads from data centres in Singapore or the UAE, begin to peer with or co-locate inside the Sky47 network. That kind of adoption would validate Karakoram One as a real commercial hub, not just a government project. Additionally, Quantum Global Data Centre (QGDC), backed by the Gul Ahmed Energy Group, is planning a $230 million Tier III facility due in 2027, so Pakistan’s data centre sector is suddenly very competitive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sky47 Karakoram One?

It is Pakistan’s largest sovereign AI cloud and data centre, located in the Islamabad/Rawalpindi area. It was inaugurated on July 24, 2026 by PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. It has an operational capacity of 8.5MW and is built to Tier III/IV standards.

Who owns and built the Sky47 data center?

Sky47 Limited, a majority-owned subsidiary of Mari Energies Limited (listed on PSX), owns the facility. Chinese technology company ZTE was the key project partner in building it.

What does ‘sovereign cloud’ mean for Pakistan?

It means data stored in the facility stays inside Pakistan, under Pakistani law. Government agencies, banks, and private companies can run services without their data leaving the country or being subject to foreign laws. This is called data sovereignty.

Is Sky47 only in Islamabad?

No. A second 5MW facility is under development at Karachi’s Port Qasim and should be ready by September 2026. A Lahore node is also planned, creating a three-city network with geographic redundancy. The Islamabad campus is designed to eventually scale beyond 50MW.
