Custom silicon is really popular right now. Apple is entirely focused on its A-series and M-series semiconductors for phones, tablets, and desktops, but Google recently announced a next-generation Tensor processor for the Pixel 7.
For years, Samsung has created its own mobile processors, but Exynos-branded chips aren’t limited to the company’s handsets.
Despite confirmation that a unique CPU will be available for future Galaxy phones, we may have to wait much longer than most people imagine.
According to a new leak from Ice Universe, Samsung intends to include a unique chipset in the Galaxy S22’s successor, but not until 2025.
On its present pace, that would result in a unique processor powering the S25 series, which would be generations away from phones available today.
In April, the company revealed that a Galaxy-exclusive processor was in the works without revealing any other information, such as when it may be available in actual devices.
If this Exynos chip or whatever branding Samsung would use in its stead is indeed years away from being ready, Samsung may fall behind the competition. A custom-designed chip for its flagship phones could help Samsung overtake Apple, but at this rate, we won’t know what to anticipate for years.
