Samsung unveiled its own large language model (LLM) just days after OpenAI announced ChatGPT-4 Turbo.
During the Samsung AI Forum 2023 on Wednesday, the company unveiled its generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, with plans to incorporate it into its smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
Samsung Gauss Development
However, after Samsung developers accidentally leaked confidential data while using ChatGPT to help write code, the company banned the use of ChatGPT on company devices and began developing its own generative AI tool for internal use.
The company is now releasing its own LLM to the public.
Furthermore, OpenAI has maintained its lead in generative AI tools despite fierce competition from Google and Anthropic models, but it lacks the strategic advantage of building its own hardware.
However, with Cupertino planning an LLM for its devices, Google adding its AI chatbot Bard to the Pixel, and even rumors of Apple working on a ChatGPT competitor, the generative AI landscape may be shifting.
Gauss Variants
Actually, Samsung Gauss is available in three variants: Gauss Language, Gauss Code, and Gauss Image.
However, the language model works similarly to ChatGPT and will be used for text writing, document summarization, and translation.
Furthermore, the coding model will be used to assist developers in writing code, and the image model supports multi-modality, which means it can generate and edit images.
Users’ work and daily lives will be transformed by generative AI.
Moreover, including LLMs in smartphones would have a greater impact and open up new possibilities for life in the AI era.
Employees are currently using the Gauss model, which will be expanded to “a variety of Samsung product applications to provide new user experiences in the near future,” according to the announcement.
