In a strong move to bring order to the roads, the Punjab police carried out a major enforcement push under the new traffic reforms. In just one day, officers seized more than 12,800 vehicles and arrested over 3,100 people. This large action reflects the chief minister’s wish for a modern and disciplined traffic system that protects lives and ensures safer travel for everyone across the province.
Focus on Public Complaints and Safety
The province strengthened its traffic rules after many public complaints about reckless driving, unlicensed riders, and old smoke-emitting vehicles. The new system now stresses road safety, digital challans, and firm action against repeat offenders. The aim is to build habits that keep roads calm and secure, while guiding drivers to follow rules that have long been ignored by many across different towns.

Thousands of Vehicles Impounded
During the 24-hour operation, police impounded thousands of vehicles, mostly motorcycles and rickshaws, for repeated violations. Officers said the drive was designed to save lives and bring discipline back to daily travel. A spokesperson explained that this enforcement is not just punishment but a step toward long-term change. The force also issued thousands of challans worth millions of rupees.
Action Against Polluting Vehicles
Police fined 3,511 smoke-emitting vehicles and impounded 384 of them during the operation. They also seized fitness certificates of three vehicles to control environmental harm. These steps aim to improve air quality and reduce the dangerous smoke that affects busy roads. Along with fines, authorities urged owners to repair their vehicles, hoping cleaner roads would help build a healthier future.
Driving Licences Issued in Large Numbers
To regularise driving activity, more than 42,500 licences were issued in a single day. Over the past week, police issued more than 257,000 challans and collected heavy fines. The high number of licences shows drivers are now moving toward legalising their travel. Officials believe this shift will support a safer and more organised traffic system across Punjab’s busy routes.
Accidents Still a Major Concern
Despite strict measures, road accidents remained alarming. In the last 24 hours alone, sixteen people lost their lives and more than 1,600 were injured in over 1,400 crashes. Rescue teams shifted many serious cases to hospitals, while minor injuries were treated on the spot. Authorities stress that real safety will come only when drivers change their behaviour on the roads.
