Punjab has decided to increase fines for motorcyclists who do not wear helmets in order to improve road safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
Decision of Punjab
During a high-level traffic police meeting chaired by Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Traffic Mirza Faran Baig, it was decided to raise the fine from Rs. 200 to Rs. 2,000 across Punjab.
Fines Range From Rs. 200 to Rs. 2,000
The decision was to be strictly enforced by the chief traffic officers (CTOs) and district traffic officers. In addition, the fine for illegal parking has been raised from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000.
During the meeting, AIG Mirza Faran Baig directed concerned officials to increase the number of service centers and driving schools in Punjab in order to improve public accessibility.
The recent order is part of the traffic police’s efforts to encourage people to follow traffic laws. Deputy Commissioner Lahore recently implemented a ‘no helmet, no petrol’ rule.
The order was, however, suspended by the Lahore High Court (LHC). In his decision, Justice Raheel Kamran Sheikh stated that instead of issuing such strict orders, the government should pass legislation on the subject.
