A legal requirement to get biometric details when transferring vehicles from one owner to another was postponed by the Punjab government on Monday for a period of two months.
According to a notification from the Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department, the provincial government was exempting motor vehicles from rule 47 of the rules to the extent of the transferor’s biometric impression following consultation with the Punjab Provincial Transport Authority.
The exclusion is valid for a period of two months.
The statement did, however, emphasize that it would only apply in circumstances of extreme hardship following verification and approval by the pertinent registering body.
The note further said that after two months, the exception will be deemed removed.
Any person wishing to transfer the car after the exemption has expired must be physically present for biometric verification of their identification and ownership of the vehicle.
Once put into place, it will significantly reduce instances of fraudulent car ownership and transfer.
The ban will remain in effect until December 11, 2022. The government will add the data of approximately 177,000 old automobiles to the new system in the interim.
The agency made it clear that this two-month time will also act as a grace period for anybody who wants to register or transfer their car.
