The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has begun a consultation process on Quality of Service (QoS) regulations, and it is looking for feedback from the general public, consumers, and broadband service providers.
The proposed ‘Fixed-line QoS Regulations,’ according to the telecom regulator, are available on the PTA website and are open for comments, views, and feedback until March 15.
According to the regulator, the related inspections, surveys, and benchmarking exercises are carried out on a regular basis to ensure that telecommunication service users receive the best possible QoS levels.
Through this consultative practice, the PTA also hopes to engage service providers in a series of constructive dialogues in order to remove impediments to service quality.
The PTA also publishes QoS results on a regular basis so that users can compare operators.
The increased number of subscribers and advances in broadband technologies in recent years have prompted the PTA to revise the existing parameters.
Furthermore, some quality of experience standards have been implemented in accordance with best international and regional practices, as well as standards defined by international bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication (ITU-T) and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), among others.
In light of recent surveys indicating deterioration in the quality of telecom services in the country, the telecom regulator has increased the frequency with which QoS surveys are conducted.
On February 18, the PTA published a draught of the new QoS regulations on its website, and it has now launched a public consultation on that draught, which will be subject to revision based on feedback gathered during the process.
