PTA has taken its DIRBS mobile device registration system offline from 5:00 PM on June 24, 2026 to 6:00 AM on June 25, 2026 for a planned network infrastructure upgrade. During this window, Pakistanis will be unable to register new mobile devices or pay device taxes online. Services are expected to resume by early morning on June 25.

PTA’s Network Upgrade: What’s Happening?

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially announced a scheduled maintenance activity aimed at strengthening the backbone infrastructure that powers its digital services. According to PTA, the upgrade is designed to improve overall network stability, enhance security, and boost the reliability of systems that millions of users across Pakistan depend on daily.

The maintenance window runs from 5:00 PM (PKT) on June 24, 2026 all the way through to 6:00 AM (PKT) on June 25, 2026 — a roughly 13-hour downtime window. PTA’s technical teams will remain on standby throughout the period to monitor progress and minimize disruptions wherever possible.

Which Service Is Affected?

The primary service impacted is DIRBS — the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System. DIRBS’s core objective is to ensure a healthy growth of the mobile device ecosystem in Pakistan. More specifically, it ensures the use of legal devices on mobile networks, and the import, use, and growth of legal devices improves the quality of mobile service to consumers, preserves network resources of mobile operators, and provides better security while ensuring the protection of intellectual property rights.

In practical terms, if your phone is not registered with PTA, you will not be able to make or receive any calls or text messages. This makes DIRBS a mission-critical platform for anyone bringing a new device into the country or purchasing a phone that requires formal registration.

Who Will Be Affected in Pakistan?

The downtime affects a broad cross-section of users. DIRBS is the system implemented by PTA to identify, register, and block non-compliant devices — covering mobile phones, tablets, routers, and various IoT devices that use SIM or IMEI numbers.

Among those most impacted are:

  • Overseas Pakistanis returning home with foreign-purchased smartphones who need to pay the applicable tax and register their devices before connecting to local networks.
  • International travelers visiting Pakistan who must register devices for temporary use. All international travelers planning to carry or bring new or used mobile devices for use on a Pakistani mobile operator are required to register their IMEIs using the PTA online portal or use the kiosk facility provided at Customs desks at all international airports.
  • Local buyers of grey-market or imported handsets who are mid-registration process and cannot complete payment or submission during the outage window.
  • Commercial importers and distributors awaiting device approvals tied to DIRBS records.

Is This the First Time DIRBS Has Gone Down?

Not at all — scheduled maintenance of DIRBS is a periodic necessity. Earlier in 2025, PTA announced scheduled maintenance of DIRBS that temporarily suspended mobile registration services for nearly three days, with the maintenance window running from 7:00 PM on March 7, 2025 to 11:45 PM on March 9, 2025. The June 2026 outage window is significantly shorter by comparison, which suggests PTA’s infrastructure planning is becoming more efficient over time.

Past maintenance events have shown that such upgrades help PTA maintain strict control over illegal mobile imports and ensure that all devices operate under Pakistan’s regulatory framework.

What Should You Do Right Now?

If you were planning to register a device tonight, here’s what you should do:

  • Wait until after 6:00 AM on June 25, 2026 — that is when PTA expects to restore full service. Attempting to register during the maintenance period may result in errors or incomplete submissions.
  • Note down your IMEI number in advance. Your IMEI can be obtained by dialing *#06# from the dialpad of your mobile device, or it may be written on the box of the device or printed on the inside of the device visible by removing the back cover and battery.
  • Keep your documents ready — CNIC (for Pakistani nationals), passport, and device purchase invoice — so you can register quickly once the portal is back online.
  • Don’t panic if you see delays post-restoration. If you face delays after the outage, it may be due to high traffic, so it is best to wait a few hours before retrying.

Why Does DIRBS Matter So Much?

In Pakistan, registering your mobile device with PTA isn’t just a recommendation — it’s a requirement. The system is deeply integrated with FBR’s tax collection infrastructure. Once you submit your device registration application, a Payment Slip ID (PSID) is generated by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), which includes the amount of tax you must pay to register your device legally.

This linkage means that DIRBS downtime doesn’t only affect PTA services in isolation — it also halts device tax payments to the government, underscoring why PTA keeps such windows as short and off-peak as possible.

For overseas Pakistanis, there’s an added benefit worth knowing: the registration process is fully digitized and can be completed through the official Device Registration System portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk/drs. Once the maintenance concludes, the portal will be fully accessible again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will PTA DIRBS be back online?

PTA has officially stated that the maintenance window ends at 6:00 AM on June 25, 2026. The system should be fully accessible after that time, though brief residual slowness due to a surge in user traffic is possible immediately after restoration.

Q: Can I still use my already-registered phone during the DIRBS outage?

Yes, absolutely. The maintenance only affects the ability to register new devices or perform transactions on the DIRBS portal. Phones that are already registered and active on Pakistani networks will function completely normally throughout the maintenance period.

Q: What is DIRBS and why does it exist?

DIRBS registration is the system used for individual device registration based on a device’s unique IMEI number, primarily relevant for personal devices — especially mobile phones and tablets — brought into Pakistan by individuals such as travelers, overseas Pakistanis, or local buyers. DIRBS checks the IMEI against a central database and allows or blocks the device’s access to local mobile networks.

Q: What happens if I try to register my phone during the maintenance window?

PTA has warned that the DIRBS portal may experience intermittent disruptions or complete unavailability during the maintenance period. Any registration attempt during this window risks incomplete processing. It is strongly advised to wait until the portal is confirmed back online after 6:00 AM on June 25 before initiating or resuming any registration.
