PTA Starts Blocking WhatsApp Accounts on Inactive SIMs

Pakistan’s telecom regulator PTA has launched its inactive SIM WhatsApp block, with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority confirming on 28 October 2026 that it has started removing access for WhatsApp accounts tied to SIM cards that are no longer active, cancelled, or in use. If your WhatsApp is still registered on an old or forgotten SIM, your account may already be at risk.

What the PTA’s Inactive SIM WhatsApp Block Means

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has started blocking WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive SIM cards. This is not just a warning anymore. PTA officials confirmed that the blocking process has begun following an awareness campaign urging users to keep their WhatsApp accounts linked to active mobile numbers in their possession.

The move did not come out of nowhere. The authority had warned in September that accounts associated with inactive SIMs could face blocking, saying some were being used for fraud and other illegal activities. Before that, in May, the PTA cautioned that WhatsApp accounts linked to blocked, cancelled, inactive or unregistered SIMs could become inaccessible. The regulator gave users months of notice. Now the actual blocking has started.

Why an Inactive SIM Is a Real Security Problem

Many users do not realise the specific danger here. It is not just about losing your account. Inactive mobile numbers can pose security risks because telecom operators may eventually reissue them to other subscribers. If a WhatsApp account remains linked to such a number, the original owner could lose control of the account or expose it to unauthorised access.

Think about what that means in practice. A scammer who gets a reissued number could receive your WhatsApp verification code and take over your account, your chats, and your contact list. A Senate committee has also raised concerns about the misuse of WhatsApp accounts and alleged illegal use of SIM cards in cases of financial fraud. The regulator’s action directly responds to this broader pattern of abuse.

WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive mobile numbers are used for illegal activities. Some WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive SIMs are used for fraud and other illegal activities. By cutting off these accounts at the network level, PTA aims to remove a tool that criminals have been exploiting.

How to Check If Your SIM Is Still Active

This is the step most users skip, and it is the most important one. Before you do anything else, confirm whether the SIM linked to your WhatsApp is still active. Pakistan has a simple official method for this.

  • SMS to 668: SMS your 13-digit CNIC to 668 and get an instant reply showing all your registered SIMs across Jazz, Telenor, Zong, Ufone, and SCO.
  • PTA web portal: Use PTA’s SIM Information System at cnic.sims.pk to check SIM counts on your CNIC.
  • Contact your operator: PTA has advised consumers to contact their mobile operator’s franchise or customer service centre if they need to verify their SIM registration or resolve an issue with an inactive number.

If you find a SIM in your name that is inactive or cancelled, act immediately. Do not wait.

What to Do If Your WhatsApp Is on an Old Number

The fix is straightforward if you still have access to your WhatsApp account. Users who have changed their mobile numbers should use WhatsApp’s number-change feature to transfer their account registration to their current number. This keeps all your chats, groups, and settings intact.

Here is how to do it inside WhatsApp on Android or iPhone:

  • Open WhatsApp and go to Settings
  • Tap Account, then Change Number
  • Enter your old (inactive) number and your new active number
  • WhatsApp will send a verification code to the new number
  • Complete verification and your account moves to the new number

Taking timely action when changing a mobile number or discontinuing a SIM is important to help safeguard WhatsApp accounts and avoid unnecessary complications.

If you have already lost access to your WhatsApp because the inactive SIM WhatsApp block has been applied, recovery becomes much harder. You would need to contact WhatsApp support directly, and there is no guarantee of getting the account back, especially if the number has already been reassigned.

Who Is Most at Risk

This action affects a large number of everyday users, not just bad actors. Common situations that put people at risk include:

  • You switched networks or got a new number but kept the same WhatsApp
  • Your old SIM expired or was cancelled due to non-use
  • A family member’s SIM lapsed and their WhatsApp is still on that number
  • You use a second SIM for WhatsApp that you rarely top up

Users whose WhatsApp accounts are connected to invalid or inactive SIM cards risk losing access to their accounts, chats, contacts, and other personal data. Years of messages and group memberships can disappear if you do not act.

The PTA’s authority over telecom regulation in Pakistan is outlined on the PTA official website, where it also publishes advisories and guidance for users.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has PTA actually started blocking WhatsApp or is it still just a warning?

The blocking has started. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has begun blocking WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive mobile SIMs, urging users to ensure their accounts remain associated with active mobile numbers that they currently use and can access. This is no longer a future threat.

Which WhatsApp accounts are affected by the inactive SIM WhatsApp block?

The authority had advised users to update their WhatsApp registration if their previously registered SIM cards had been deactivated, cancelled or were no longer in use. If your SIM falls into any of these categories, your account is at risk.

How do I quickly check if my SIM is still active in Pakistan?

The PTA official method to check SIM status is via the 668 SMS service. You send your CNIC number without dashes to 668 and PTA tells you how many SIMs are registered on your CNIC and their numbers. It is free and instant.

Can I recover my WhatsApp if it gets blocked under this rule?

Failure to update account information in time may result in unexpected logouts and difficulties in restoring access. Recovery is not guaranteed, especially if your old number has been reassigned to someone else. The safest move is to update your WhatsApp number before a block happens, not after.
