Pakistan Super League PSL is preparing for a historic expansion in its 11th edition 2026. The total number of teams will increase from 6 to 8. This expansion has been planned by the Pakistan Cricket Board PCB to give the league more commercial reach competitiveness and fan engagement. Cricket lovers will get to see more exciting action. From the start PSL began with only 5 teams and later in 2018 Multan Sultans were added making it 6 teams. Now the league will expand to 8 teams.
Base Price and Financial Setup
The base price for each of the two new franchises has been fixed by PCB at approximately PKR 100 crore or 4 million US Dollars per team. This base price is the starting point for investors to place bids in the auction. The final amount can go well above the base price depending on competition among bidders.
Bidding and Auction Process
For the PSL expansion bidders have submitted their proposals. Ten qualified bidders have been shortlisted. The auction will be held on January 8 2026 at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad. This auction will decide the final owners and the names of the two new franchises. Successful bidders will also have the option to choose their franchise city and team name.
International Interest and Competitive Bidding
The PSL 2026 expansion has attracted interest not only from Pakistani investors but also from groups in the US Australia Canada and UAE. This shows the league’s global appeal and business potential. Some major business groups like the Tareen Group who were associated with Multan Sultans have also shown interest in the new teams. This is expected to increase competition and make the auction more competitive.
Cities and Future Planning
The final cities for the new franchises have not yet been announced. Shortlisted cities include Rawalpindi Hyderabad Faisalabad Gilgit Muzaffarabad and Sialkot. Once the final bidders are selected they can assign their franchise to one of these cities. This will increase the geographical reach of PSL and bring representation from different regions of Pakistan.
PSL Future Vision
This expansion is not just a financial move for PSL. It is a strategic step to increase Pakistan’s footprint in cricket and the entertainment industry. Adding two new teams generating global investor interest and exciting the local fan base will strengthen PSL as a sports brand. After the auction when final owners and amounts are announced the league will continue to grow stronger.
