Onions might cost more than Rs. 270 per kg, according to the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchant Association (PFVA), whose cargoes are being held up at several ports of the Karachi harbour.
In a letter to the minister of commerce, PFVA claimed that containers are being delayed because commercial banks are withholding paperwork since there isn’t enough foreign currency available.
According to the letter, the cost of the containers would increase as time went on if proper clearance was delayed. The high price of onion containers would seriously hurt the average person by making onions out of their price range.
The letter said that retail prices for onions range between Rs. 250 and 270 per kg and that with each further delay in clearance, these costs are anticipated to rise even more. The wholesale price of onions is Rs. 175 per kg.
In their letter, the group said that in addition to onion containers being detained at the port, there are also containers of ginger and garlic.
According to the group, as of Tuesday, 104 containers of garlic worth $2,533,440, 63 containers of ginger worth $816,480, and 250 containers of onions worth $2,107,500 are being held up at the Karachi ports (today). The government has been encouraged to take action on this matter quickly by the association.
