Pakistan Aviation Suffers Rs20 Billion Loss Amid Flight Cancellations

Air travel to and from Pakistan has been disrupted for the fifth consecutive day due to restrictions imposed by several Gulf countries. These restrictions are a result of the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, which has led to heightened security measures and airspace closures affecting international flights. Since February 28, a total of 578 flights have been cancelled, causing widespread inconvenience for passengers.

Massive Revenue Loss for Aviation Sector

The disruptions have had a severe financial impact on Pakistan’s aviation industry. According to reports, the sector has suffered an estimated loss of Rs20 billion in revenue. These losses stem from flight cancellations, reduced passenger bookings, and additional operational costs incurred due to rerouted flights.

Karachi Airport Most Affected

Karachi has recorded the highest number of cancellations, with 40 flights suspended to destinations including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Sharjah, Kuwait, and Bahrain. This has significantly affected both international travelers and connecting passengers, highlighting Karachi’s role as Pakistan’s busiest international hub.

Other Major Airports Facing Disruptions

Islamabad airport follows closely with 38 flight cancellations to major Gulf cities. Lahore airport saw 28 cancellations, while Peshawar reported 24 suspended flights. Other cities, including Multan, Sialkot, and Faisalabad, have also experienced cancellations, with 18, 8, and 6 flights affected respectively.

Airlines Impacted by Cancellations

Both international and domestic carriers have been affected. Major international airlines include Emirates, Etihad, Air Arabia, Flydubai, and Qatar Airways. Pakistani carriers such as PIA, Airblue, and Fly Jinnah have also faced cancellations. At Islamabad International Airport alone, nearly 180 flights have been cancelled since the disruptions began, affecting routes to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London, Bahrain, and Doha.

Impact on Domestic Flights

Airspace restrictions have not only affected international flights but also disrupted some domestic routes, including Islamabad to Gilgit, Skardu, and Karachi. Airlines are deploying alternative routes to manage the situation, and PIA has used Boeing 777 aircraft on certain diverted flights to accommodate longer routes and passenger demand.

Passenger Advisory and Daily Flight Status

Approximately 35 to 40 two-way flights are being cancelled daily from Islamabad due to the ongoing tensions. Authorities and airlines have advised passengers to confirm their flight schedules before traveling to airports. The situation remains fluid, and aviation operations are expected to continue facing challenges until regional tensions ease.
