Pakistan 5G Rollout Hits 1,136 Sites With August 14 in Sight

Pakistan’s 5G rollout has reached 1,136 live sites spread across 23 cities, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s update from August 4, 2026. The number is a real milestone, but the story behind it is more complicated than a single headline figure. Three operators are racing an informal August 14 target, the sites are heavily bunched in four cities, and tens of millions of Pakistanis in smaller towns are watching from the sidelines.

Where the Pakistan 5G Rollout Stands Right Now

Jazz is clearly ahead. Jazz leads the deployment with 689 5G sites, giving it roughly a 60.7% share of all live sites. Zong follows with 338 sites, while Ufone has deployed 109 sites. Together, those three numbers add up to 1,136, a figure the PTA published in its August 4 live-site tracker.

Look at where those sites actually sit, and a pattern jumps out. Karachi has the most 5G sites at 257, closely followed by Lahore with 241. Islamabad has 192, while Faisalabad has 131. Add those four cities together and you get around 821 sites, roughly 72% of the national total. The remaining 315 sites are shared across 19 other cities, which means most of Pakistan is still getting a thin slice of coverage.

Each operator has its own geographic focus. Jazz leads in several of the country’s biggest cities, including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan, while Zong has a particularly strong presence in Karachi and Quetta. Ufone’s deployment is smaller overall and stays concentrated in major markets such as Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

The August 14 Race

The August 14 Independence Day date is not a formal government deadline, it is an internal industry target that operators have set for themselves. Sources in the PTA and the telecom industry say work on 5G infrastructure is continuing on an emergency footing, and operators have set internal targets to complete major phases of their preparations by August 14.

The ambition is significant. Jazz is working to complete approximately 1,000 5G cell sites, Zong is targeting 400 to 500 sites, while PTML (Ufone/Telenor Pakistan), following its merger, is focusing on completing 60 to 100 5G sites. As of the August 4 count, Jazz still needs about 311 more sites to hit its own target, and Zong needs at least 62 more to clear its lower estimate. The clock is running.

This whole push traces back to Pakistan’s first-ever 5G spectrum auction in March 2026. That milestone followed the PTA’s spectrum auction, which auctioned 480 MHz of 5G spectrum across multiple bands and generated $507 million. The auction gave successful bidders 15-year technology-neutral licences, allowing operators to deploy 5G at their own pace while meeting specific quality requirements.

If you want a deeper look at how Pakistan’s telecom history led to this point, our article on how Pakistan went from telegraphs to 5G and AI in 79 years puts the current rollout in a much wider context.

What Users Can Expect From 5G Right Now

One practical detail that many people miss: you do not need a new SIM card to use 5G. Consumers will not require a new SIM card to use 5G services, though they will need a 5G-compatible smartphone. Existing 4G data packages currently function on the new 5G networks without requiring separate subscriptions, so users with compatible devices and active SIM cards can test the high-speed network immediately.

Speed-wise, the numbers are encouraging for anyone inside a covered zone. Cities like Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, and Faisalabad are already inside active 5G coverage zones, with real-world download speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to well above 250 Mbps in tested areas. That compares favourably with the 10 to 25 Mbps most people see on 4G today.

There is also a benefit even for people who never upgrade their phone. The first phase rollout guarantees a minimum download speed of 50 Mbps, and operators are also required to enhance 4G network speeds four to five times in areas where 5G is not yet active, a significant detail most coverage glosses over. Even if you never upgrade to a 5G-compatible phone, you should still see faster 4G speeds as a side effect of this rollout.

The Coverage Gap Nobody Is Talking About

Here is the part of the Pakistan 5G rollout story that gets the least attention: the rural question. With 72% of live sites locked inside four cities, everyone else is waiting. And that waiting group is large. Uneven rollout plans threaten to deepen the digital divide, as operators are expected to launch 5G services first in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, while rural areas, home to nearly 70% of Pakistan’s population, still struggle with unreliable 4G coverage.

The PTA itself has flagged this risk. The authority has warned that ‘bridging the digital divide constitutes a significant challenge in the rollout of 5G in Pakistan,’ noting that rural and remote regions risk being left behind due to the high costs and logistic hurdles of extending 5G to sparsely populated areas.

There is also an infrastructure layer beneath the sites themselves. Only around 15% of telecom towers connect to fibre, a key requirement for stable 5G networks, and the PTA has warned that operators must invest heavily in fibre backhaul, advanced antennas, and small cells. Without fibre running to a tower, the 5G radio on top of it cannot deliver its full potential.

Ufone faces a specific structural challenge here. Ufone bought no 700 MHz coverage layer in the spectrum auction. That means it did not acquire the strongest tool for deep indoor reach or long-distance rural expansion. Its sites are fewer and its spectrum mix makes wide-area rural coverage harder to achieve quickly.

For Pakistan’s broader digital economy goals, the stakes are high. Telecom experts believe that rapid deployment of 5G infrastructure will support Pakistan’s digital economy by creating new opportunities in artificial intelligence, smart cities, e-commerce, telemedicine, online education, and industrial automation. But those benefits concentrate in cities first.

You can read more about the economic risk of slow digital infrastructure action in our piece on Pakistan’s digital economy risking $60 billion without faster action.

The official source for live coverage updates is the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), which publishes operator-wise 5G site counts. You can also check your operator’s coverage directly: Jazz’s official site lists areas where 5G is currently active.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 5G sites does Pakistan have right now?

As of the PTA’s August 4, 2026 update, Pakistan’s 5G rollout stands at 1,136 live sites across 23 cities. Jazz has 689, Zong has 338, and Ufone has 109 sites active.

Which cities in Pakistan have the most 5G coverage?

Karachi leads with 257 sites, followed by Lahore (241), Islamabad (192), and Faisalabad (131). These four cities together account for about 72% of all live 5G sites in the country right now.

Do I need a new SIM to use 5G in Pakistan?

No. You do not need a new SIM card. You do need a 5G-compatible smartphone. Your current data package will work on 5G if you are inside a covered area.

Will 5G reach small cities and rural areas soon?

Not quickly. Experts and the PTA itself have warned that rural areas, where nearly 70% of Pakistanis live, may wait several years for meaningful 5G coverage. The current Pakistan 5G rollout is focused on major urban centres, and fibre backhaul gaps make rapid rural expansion difficult.
