In Karachi, 93% of calls to the emergency helpline Rescue 1122 are either false or unrelated to emergencies, creating significant barriers for individuals in true life-threatening circumstances.
The alarming increase in false and meaningless attempts has hampered the rapid response necessary to resolve genuine emergencies in Pakistan’s largest city.
The calls effect functioning of department
Abid Naveed, chief executive officer of Sindh Integrated Emergency and Health Services, has expressed grave concern over the “irresponsible conduct” of the public, which he says severely hampers the efficient provision of emergency medical aid and the evacuation of patients across the province of Sindh.
There are between 14,000 and 15,000 calls every day, but only about 1,000 are genuine emergencies, he said, leaving the remaining 97% to cause disruptions.
