Netflix is doubling down on new revenue-generating strategies. In 2023, the media streaming giant launched a global crackdown on password sharing while also introducing a new ad-supported tier.
Netflix Basic Account
Netflix appears to be quietly discontinuing its cheaper subscription tier, known as ‘Basic.’
The basic Netflix package in Pakistan costs only Rs. 450 per month, which is equivalent to $11.99 in Western countries.
It is well-known for its low prices and ad-free viewing experience, but it stopped accepting new or returning customers last summer.
However, it will now begin to phase out entirely, beginning in the United Kingdom and Canada. Netflix’s popularity numbers reflect this shift towards ad-supported tiers.
The ad tier increased by 70% in the last quarter and now accounts for an alarming 40% of new Netflix subscriptions in markets where it exists.
Standard Tier Offers
After the Basic Tier is removed, users will be able to select between the Standard Tier and the Premium Tier for an ad-free experience.
The Standard tier offers 1080p streaming and costs Rs. 800 per month in Pakistan, while the Premium tier offers 4K streaming for Rs. 1,100. You can also stream on up to six devices with the Premium tier.
The cancellation of the Basic tier has so far only affected Canada and the United Kingdom, but it is only a matter of time before it spreads to other regions and countries, including Pakistan.
For example, the password-sharing crackdown arrived in Pakistan shortly after the rest of the world, implying that the cheaper plan will most likely be phased out soon.
