According to a new Canalys research, Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has emerged as the world’s largest chipmaker in Q4 2023.
The chipmaker sold 117 million chipsets during the year, while Apple and Qualcomm sold 78 million and 69 million, respectively.
Other major chipmakers on the list include Google, Samsung, and Unisoc, but their market share pales in comparison to industry leaders like Qualcomm and MediaTek.
During the same year, the Taiwanese chipmaker’s overall exports climbed by 21% from the previous year, totaling $23 billion in revenue.
Apple’s chipset sales, however, is significantly more than MediaTek’s, at $87 billion.
Qualcomm is also making more money than MediaTek in this area, with $30 billion in 2023.
Samsung Doing Miserably
However, while Qualcomm’s chipset revenue is higher, it is really down 2% from 2022.
This is still nothing compared to Samsung’s frightening 44% drop in the same category, indicating that the Korean phone manufacturer has a lot of catching up to do.
However, the Exynos 2400 in the Galaxy S24 appears to be a positive move forward.
During the quarter, Samsung generated only 40% of Qualcomm’s revenue and 25% of MediaTek’s.
According to the Canalys research, Xiaomi was one of Qualcomm’s largest customers, accounting for 25% of total shipments.
MediaTek, meanwhile, attributed 20% of its shipments to Xiaomi, while Samsung remained its largest customer in Q4, 2023.
Huawei’s Big Comeback
Huawei is returning to the SoC market with a bang, posting a staggering 5,121% increase in shipments over previous times.
The Chinese OEM generated $7 billion in revenue from its chipsets and shipped 7 million units.
The company’s revival is fueled primarily by its own Kirin silicon.
Unisoc, known for its entry-level goods, increased revenue by 24% year on year, reaching $3 billion and shipping 27 million devices.
Google’s Semiconductor
Google’s semiconductor business, like Samsung’s, is not doing well right now, with an estimated $2 billion in revenue but just 3 million shipments.
It is unknown whether this is due to the low performance of Tensor chipsets.
