Following the success of the Billion Tree Tsunami initiative, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced the commencement of the Billion Tree Plus project.
According to reports, while chairing a meeting in Peshawar on Friday, CM KP Ali Amin Gandapur urged officials to complete project preparations.
The conference was attended by key government officials, including Fazal Hakim, the Provincial Minister for Forests.
During the meeting, officials briefed the Chief Minister on the department’s administrative affairs, performance, targets, and other issues.
The officials were ordered to devise a strategy to prevent tree-cutting and increase the department’s revenue. Gandapur directed to “raise the amount of fines to such a level that it exceeds the price of the wood obtained from the cutting of trees.”
In addition, he ordered the installation of CCTV cameras at all checkpoints to monitor timber smuggling.
“After all, forests are the province’s assets which we have to pass on to our future generations,” the chief minister remarked. He stated that forest conservation is the main focus of his government.
CM Gandapur remarked that extending the forest acreage would assist the government mitigate the negative effects of climate change.
Furthermore, Wildlife Department personnel were directed to make recommendations and develop an action plan for promoting fisheries in the province.
