The transport department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has not used its annual development allocation.
According to finance department documents, the KP government allocated Rs8.792 billion for the transport department in the current financial year’s annual development program, of which the finance department has released Rs353.729 million and the transport department has spent only Rs272 million as of the third quarter.
According to the records, the provincial administration has spent only Rs158.288 million of the Rs8.678 billion loan received from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on the mass transit project – Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).
According to finance department sources, monies could not be provided to the BRT project, a significant initiative of the transport department, due to difficulty in receiving funding from the ADB.
Similarly, the transport department could only spend Rs97 million of the Rs113.988 million earmarked for the transport inspection station project in the annual development program.
According to the data, just Rs12 million could be spent on the “Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering Unit,” for which the finance department had allocated Rs18.707 million.
According to sources, the BRT project has received the most funding. The project was expected to be finished in December 2021, however due to a lack of finances from ADB province, it will instead be finished in July 2022.
