A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday by the University of Karachi, the Italian University of Naples L’Orientale, and the University for Foreigners of Perugia.
The ceremony took place at the KU Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Science Information Centre, with representatives from both universities signing on, including the Consul General of Italy in Karachi, Danilo Giurdanella, and KU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi.

The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding is to promote academic cooperation among participating universities by establishing collaboration programmes for teaching, training, and research in a variety of fields such as science, humanities, tourism, communication, social sciences, international relations, Italian language and culture.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is a crucial step towards boosting academic links between Pakistan and Italy.
It is expected to pave the door for joint research projects, faculty exchanges, and other collaborative activities that will benefit the education sectors of both countries.
Such collaborations can help to promote cultural understanding, improve students’ learning experiences, and produce innovative research.
The Italian Consulate in Karachi and the University of Karachi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Cooperation and Faculty and Student Exchange with the University of Naples L’Orientale for postgraduate degree programmes.
The agreement was also signed by Hon. Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Spokesperson and Advisor to CM Sindh for Law, and Dr. Shaista Tabassum, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences.
Furthermore, through the office of Consul General Danilo Giurdanella, the University of Karachi has established contact with two Italian Universities, namely the University of Perugia for Foreigners and the University of Udine, Italy.

The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Iraqi, expressed thanks to the Consulate of Italy in Karachi for providing this opportunity to the University of Karachi and stated that this academic exchange would broaden the perspectives of both universities’ students and teachers.
Italy has also become an important academic destination for Pakistani students, with several options to achieve their dreams of higher education and professional development.
Every year, the Italian diplomatic post receives around 1000 study visa applications from Sindh and Baluchistan. Italian universities are not only public, but they also have a high global standing.
The CG Giurdanella also indicated a strong desire to reactivate the Italian Language and Culture Centre at the Faculty of Social Sciences in order to resume Italian language teaching.
Although most Italian universities now offer degree programmes in English, having a basic understanding of a native language allows students to better integrate into the local culture and society.
CG Giurdanella also stated that this is just the beginning of a bilateral exchange between the University of Karachi and its Italian counterparts; moving forward, the Consulate of Italy would like to connect with more Italian Universities for cooperation agreements, as this is critical for academic exchanges between the two countries.
