On Saturday, police said the Islamabad Safe City computer system went offline after someone tried to hack it. The attack was two days ago, and they had to close the system, according to Dawn.
Hackers got into the main server on Thursday and got important information, especially criminal records.
To stop this, servers for the Complaint System, Criminal Records, Human Resources, and other software were turned off.
The Islamabad Safe City system’s warning tells officials if someone logs in without permission. But there are no backups or other servers to keep the software going. This made them turn everything off right away.
After the attack, the IT department stopped people from logging into the software and apps that use other servers and software.
An officer said this wasn’t a normal hack. It happened because logins were easy to guess. People had used simple passwords.
Also, the system’s software and apps were old. They didn’t have current licenses. This made it easier to break into.
The system that got affected does many things. It has apps for phones, records for smart police cars, data from police stations, video watching, work for the Islamabad Traffic Police, e-challan data, and criminal records.
The Safe City camera system works in different ways to be safe. Because it’s not online, it’s hard for anyone to get in without the right logins.
When asked, police spokesman Taqi Jawad said the hacking try was real. The firewall gave a warning, so officials stopped all logins.
He said they haven’t let anyone log in for the past 48 hours to make sure passwords are updated. This made it hard for many police to use the system.
