It’s no surprise that Apple is spending extensively in generative AI to keep up with its competitors. According to the newest Financial Times article, on-device generative AI features on iPhones will be available shortly, similar to Samsung’s newly unveiled Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 8.
Acquisitions and Job Listings
According to the article, Apple is now working to overcome the challenge of implementing AI on mobile devices.
The Cupertino behemoth has been quietly acquiring AI companies, most recently purchasing WaveOne, which provides AI-powered video compression.
Aside from that, Apple’s newest job listings contain “Deep Learning” talents, which are algorithms utilised for AI training.
‘Ajax’ LLM
There are also rumours that Apple would introduce its own Large Language Model (LLM) with iOS 18 later this year.
Since iOS 18 is scheduled to be released around the same time as the iPhone 16, we should expect this year’s iPhone to include on-device generative AI features for the first time.
According to reports, Apple has been working on its LLM for more than a year, and it may be dubbed “Ajax,” however it is expected to differ from competitors.
Unlike OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Ajax will be able to run locally on iPhones, allowing it to be smaller than peers such as GPT 4. This also implies that Apple will focus less on cloud-based generative AI features.
On-Device AI Rather than Cloud
However, on-device AI computation requires additional battery drainage, which Apple may be able to avoid given how power efficient its A-series chipsets have become.
It would undoubtedly give Apple an advantage over its competitors by enabling speedier AI processing without the requirement for an internet connection.
Enhanced Siri
Furthermore, a new version of Siri with AI capabilities is supposedly in the pipeline, as well as improved microphone functions to allow the phone to recognise you more quickly.
As usual, this year’s iPhone lineup is likely to be unveiled in September. The series is expected to feature the typical suspects such as the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max.
