According to famous tech expert Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to release iOS 18, which will significantly change its iPhone operating system.
Tech expert Mark Gurman
In his private subscriber-only Q&A part within the Power On newsletter, Gurman revealed details about this next upgrade, implying that it has the potential to be the most significant software shift in iPhone history.
He writes:
I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history.
While specific specifics about iOS 18’s improvements and advancements are currently unknown, Gurman hinted at future revelations.
RCS Adoption
One of the most significant changes to iOS 18 is the implementation of Rich Communication Services (RCS), which will finally allow iPhones to communicate effortlessly with Android devices and vice versa.
Google and other companies have been urging Apple to implement RCS for years, and it may finally happen with iOS 18.
Apple had previously stated its intention to incorporate RCS into the iMessage programme for iPhones, with an official announcement expected in November 2023.
Release of iOS 18
The business stated that it plans to deliver this feature “later” in 2024, which coincides roughly with the expected release of iOS 18.
RCS integration allows users to smoothly exchange high-resolution photographs and videos, benefit from read receipts and typing indicators, and actively participate in group chats, bridging the gap between Android and iPhone users.
Generative AI for Applications
Furthermore, Apple is aggressively developing generative AI technology, which has the potential to revolutionise user interactions with Siri and the Messages app.
As Mark Gurman points out, this breakthrough AI technology is likely to improve the ability of these applications to manage questions and complete phrases autonomously.
Gurman also says that the business is investigating the integration of AI elements into a variety of programmes, including Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and Xcode.
AI for Siri
The information shows that the tech giant intends to put massive language models into Siri. This intends to empower users by automating complex operations, while also promoting tighter interaction with the popular Shortcuts app.
These improvements are scheduled to be released in September of this year, when Apple typically introduces new iPhones and their supporting software, which in this case would be iOS 18.
