Huawei has just announced the vanilla Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro, as well as a special RS Porsche Design edition with a periscope telephoto macro camera. But first, let’s get the fundamentals out of the way.
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC powers all three Mates, but there is no 5G connectivity, as is the case with Huawei smartphones due to US sanctions. The Pro model has 512GB of storage and can accept an additional 256GB NM memory card.
The Mate 50 Pro is the lineup’s true hero model. It has a 6.74-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a colour depth of 10-bits at a resolution of 1212 x 2616px. The notch is responsible for the unusual resolution.
The Pro has a 50MP OIS main camera with a variable aperture of six blades that ranges from f/1.4 to f/4.0.
The ultrawide camera has a 13MP sensor and an f/2.2 lens, while the 3.5x telephoto camera has a 64MP sensor, an f/3.5 lens, and OIS.
The telephoto lens employs a RYYB sensor, which is intriguing. A 10-channel multispectral sensor and laser autofocus assist the camera system.
The 64MP telephoto lens is replaced by a 48MP periscope telephoto lens with macro capabilities in the RS Porsche Design.
On the front, we have a 13MP ultrawide camera with an f/2.4 aperture, as well as a 3D ToF sensor for advanced facial unlock. A 4,700 mAh battery powers the Mate 50 Pro, which supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging.
An advanced emergency battery saving mode allows you to keep the phone on standby for three hours even if the battery is only 1% charged.
Blue, Orange, Silver, Black, and Purple are the available colours, with the latter two available in leather and glass back variants. The Mate 50 RS is only available in Blue and Purple with ceramic backs.
