The federal government and Punjab province held an official meeting to discuss ways to reduce the country’s edible oil imports while increasing production of oil-based products.
Oil-based Products
The meeting, which was chaired by Federal Minister of Commerce and Industries Gohar Ijaz and Punjab Minister of Industries and Commerce S.M. Tanveer, delved into various proposals and how to meet the predetermined targets.
Ijaz stated that the caretaker government is committed to unlocking the nation’s agricultural potential. He emphasized that equitable compensation for farmers’ efforts would boost the country’s exports.
Government’s Support
Assuring the government’s support for farmers, he emphasized oil farmers’ willingness to allocate necessary acreage for commodity cultivation.
Ijaz advocated for close collaboration between the Dalda Board and the Punjab government in identifying suitable areas for oilseed cultivation, claiming that increasing local oil production is critical for exporting edible oil.
Provincial Minister of Industry and Commerce
S M Tanveer, the Provincial Minister of Industry and Commerce, acknowledged the dedication of Pakistan’s scientists, farmers, and citizens in his address, but expressed frustration with the lack of an efficient system.
Tanveer mentioned that 58 small dams in the Potohar Region are still inactive, and that the Greater Canal Thal project is dormant, with machinery rusting away.
Tanveer revealed ongoing efforts to create a 10-year agricultural development master plan. He anticipates an increase in commodity production, citing the government’s tough stance against smuggling.
Tanveer emphasized the importance of reducing the $5 billion spent annually on edible oil imports, with the business community fully supporting the push for self-sufficiency.
Officials from the Department of Agriculture provided an extensive briefing on the measures taken to boost oilseed production.
Chairman Dalda Board, CEO Board, Board Members, DG Extension Agriculture, DG Industries, DG Research, chief scientists, agronomists, and concerned officers attended the meeting.
