According to the latest data from web analytics firm StatCounter, Google’s share of the North American search market has slipped to its lowest position since 2009, with Bing and Yahoo making considerable gains.
As of April 2024, Google’s share is 79.89%, while Bing and Yahoo have acquired 11.86% and 6.33% of the market, respectively.
The shift in market dynamics occurs as Microsoft has been aggressively integrating advanced artificial intelligence technology into its Bing search engine.
In early 2023, Microsoft introduced the sophisticated GPT-4 language model into Bing, enabling it to give more intelligent and conversational search results.
In the six months after releasing its AI-powered search engine, Bing has seen over 1 billion talks; this move has helped generate higher usage and market share gains for the company.
As stated by StatCounter, Bing’s gains have been particularly noticeable on desktop computers, where it now enjoys a 10.17% share compared to just 4.96% on tablets and 0.51% on mobile as of April 2024.
Yahoo, powered by Bing’s search technology, has also profited from the AI advances, capturing a 2.60% share of the desktop search market.
Bing’s AI Capabilities
The influence of Bing’s AI capabilities was clear early on. Just one month after the new capabilities were introduced, in March 2023, Microsoft declared that Bing had reached 100 million daily active users for the first time.
When looking for information online, consumers can interact more naturally and conversationally thanks to the AI-driven search experience.
