With a new purchase, Google is gearing up to compete with one of its largest social media rivals. To counter TikTok, the software developer paid $100 million for Alter, a company in artificial intelligence (AI). This firm enables influencers and artists to establish avatar-based virtual identities.
The deal was finished around two months ago, according to sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke to, although neither business made any announcements in the media. The fact that the top executives of Alter had their LinkedIn accounts modified to reflect their new employment with Google without mentioning the purchase served as more proof of this.
The sources for the publication want to remain nameless since they were providing confidential information.
Google acknowledged to that it had purchased Alter, although it made no mention of the details of the transaction. Jon Slimak and Robin Raszka, the creators of Alter, have not yet responded to a request for comment.
When it first began, Alter was known as Facemoji in its American and Czech offices. Through plug-and-play technology, its platform assisted game and app developers in integrating avatar systems into their products. The firm was able to secure $3 million in initial capital from backers such as Twitter, Play Ventures, and Roosh Ventures.
Later, Alter became the new name for the AI avatar platform.
Those with knowledge of the situation have stated that Google intends to employ Alter to enhance and expand its content offerings, although specifics are still sketchy.
