Suraya Bibi, an independent candidate for the PK-1 Chitral seat in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, has made history by winning the election.
Suraya Bibi has become the first woman to be elected to Chitral’s provincial assembly. She beat Shakeel Ahmed of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan-Fazl by more than 8,000 votes.
The PK-1 Chitral has 130,189 registered voters, with 60,645 women and 69,544 men. Over 18,000 voters in the constituency supported the independent candidate.
Candidates backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have won elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and are poised to form the province’s government. Suraya Bibi was also supported by the PTI.
According to unofficial results, independent candidates have so far won 84 seats. The Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Pakistan-Fazl and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML N) won seven and five seats, respectively.
