Farogh Naseem and Amin ul Haque, both members of the MQM-P serving as federal ministers, have resigned from their positions, just hours after the party announced its intention to support the opposition in a motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Naseem, the federal minister for law and justice, and Amin ul Haque, the federal minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications (MOITT), resigned to the Prime Minister as soon as they received authorization from the MQM-P’s Rabta Committee.
The ministers considered that making such a choice would be improper as long as they were members of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government, therefore they chose to resign from the federal cabinet first.
It was thought that Naseem would support the prime minister above the party because he appreciated his counsel throughout the three-and-a-half years since the government’s inception, but because he was elected as a Senator from the MQM-p’s quota, he followed the party’s decision.
The Rabta Committee of the MQM-P and the CEC of the PPP will hold a news conference today at 4 p.m. to discuss the agreement with the media.
As the vote day on the Opposition’s no-trust motion approaches, the government has taken two blows in a row.
Below are the glimpses of both federal ministers resignations.
MQM-P decides to support Opposition
Another huge setback for the PTI came when the MQM-P opted to abandon the ruling party and join forces with the unified Opposition to support the prime minister’s no-confidence vote.
As a result of the incident, the administration lost its majority in the Lower House, and the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan, which the National Assembly is set to vote on on April 3, is likely to pass.
The Opposition currently has 177 members in the NA, and they do not require the cooperation of the disgruntled PTI MNAs. On the other hand, the government is only supported by 164 members of Parliament.
